private executive women’s membership network. Chief partnered with Morning Consult to survey 751 women leaders at and above management level in the United States.

The report found that women’s networking plays a crucial role in achieving most individual career milestones. Crucially, it also drives broader revenue benefits for organizations.

While previous studies around women’s networking tend to compare men and women (one study of German women cites personal hesitation as a reason that women’s networks are less powerful than men’s), this study found that women are confident networkers. In fact, according to the study, 94% of women above management level feel confident in the power of their network to “support or advance” their career.

“There’s a misconception that women are bad at networking simply because there’s not much research on how we build professional relationships and the impact these connections have had on our career,” said Lindsay Kaplan, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer, Chief. “We were excited to take a deeper look at how women at and above management level build their support systems and understand how they’ve leveraged these connections to achieve some incredible outcomes.”

The report also found that:

  • Networking events and groups are most effective for achieving career growth.
  • Successful networkers are proactive and engage often, not just when they need a job.
  • Only 32% of surveyed women leaders have a mentor, yet mentorship remains a powerful factor in career growth.
