Job Details

The fellow will participate in the sub-project: Metadata integration and taxonomic-functional analysis of the microbial community involved in methane cycling in soils of the Brazilian Amazon.

Project Scope

This proposal aims to study Bacteria / Archaea involved in methane consumption / emission in soils under different land uses compared to the natural forest (Amazon).

We are investigating various metabolic capabilities through in silico modeling and functional integration of omic data. The evaluation of the functional fractions of the communities will be mediated by Stable Isotope Probing (SIP) analysis and also by the isolation of organisms involved in the methane cycle.

Based on both features, DNA / RNA and SIP-labeled isolates will serve for metabolic reconstruction, generating an innovative set of data from active genes present in soils under different uses. The integration of such data with other dimensions of biodiversity in the Amazon may lead to a model whose platform will be validated for future research on microbial functional states for microbial methane consumption / emission processes.

Desirable Skills: Applicants must have prior knowledge of microbiology or related fields and also have skills in independent analysis of microbial community culture such as DNA / RNA extraction, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, modeling and statistical analysis.

Thus, it is extremely desirable for candidates to present knowledge in software and platforms for large-scale analysis (MG-RAST, QIIME, IMG / M, among others), and also knowledge in different computational languages like Python, Unix and R for statistical analysis and modeling.

The selected candidate will be involved in all stages of microbiological data acquisition, 12CH4 and 13CH4 measurements, including participation in expeditions. Proficiency in Portuguese and English is desirable as it will facilitate interaction with other national and foreign students and technicians who are already working on the project. International experience is highly desirable, evidenced by at least 6 months abroad.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP's Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of BRL 7.373,10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
