Senior Lecturer / Lecturer

The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering is well established in the fields of structural mechanics (design, analysis, testing and optimisation), noise and vibration, mechanical design, mechatronics (including automation, biomedical applications and reverse engineering), energy systems, heat transfer and thermo-fluid dynamics (including renewable energy). This appointment is specifically aimed at strengthening the Department's expertise in the field of energy systems, heat transfer and thermo-fluid dynamics, as well as maintaining high educational standards and expanding the research profile.

Duties
  • Teaching and developing undergraduate modules, as well as supervising undergraduate student projects in the areas of energy systems, heat transfer and thermo-fluid dynamics;
  • Teaching and developing postgraduate modules, as well as supervising postgraduate student projects and theses in the areas of energy systems, heat transfer and thermo-fluid dynamics, with an emphasis on refrigeration and air conditioning and internal combustion engines;
  • Conducting and funding research in the above-mentioned areas, in cooperation with one of the research groups of the department;
  • Rendering service to industry through specialist consulting.


Senior Lecturer:
  • A relevant doctoral degree, plus at least three years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience, OR a relevant master's degree, plus at least eight years' applicable practical and/or management experience in industry;
  • An applicable four-year bachelor's degree (such as BEng or BScEng) in Engineering, recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • The ability to communicate clearly in at least English and to teach courses and modules as part of the typical Mechanical and Mechatronic undergraduate engineering programme;
  • Sound communication and/or teaching skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills.


Lecturer:
  • A relevant master's degree, plus at least three years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience, OR an applicable doctoral degree;
  • An applicable four-year bachelor's degree (such as BEng or BScEng) in Engineering, recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • The ability to communicate clearly in at least English and to teach courses and modules as part of the typical Mechanical and Mechatronic undergraduate engineering programme;
  • Sound communication and/or teaching skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills.


Desirable
  • More than the minimum practical, teaching and/or research experience in an area relevant to the position being applied for;
  • Proven CFD or Heat Transfer knowledge;
  • Evaluation by the NRF as a researcher;
  • Registration as PrEng;
  • Proficiency in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa.
