The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology requires the services of a dynamic person of proven academic stature and relevant management experience to lead the Department of Information Science.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Promoting, planning, organizing and managing academic and research programmes and the Department's research profile;
  • Recruiting and managing of world class personnel;
  • All financial activities including externally funded projects;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department with the emphasis on growth on graduate level.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:
  • A PhD in Information Science;
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • A proven understanding and publications in the broader information science environment including multimedia, publishing studies and IT-related subjects;
  • Supervision of PhD and graduation of Master's candidates;
  • National recognition as a researcher.

Professor
  • As for Associate Professor;

plus
  • International recognition as a researcher;
  • Experience in the successful graduation of PhD candidates.


Head of Department must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Experience in managing Information Science and technical staff, particularly in a university environment;
  • Teaching and research experience in areas such as multimedia and publishing studies and interdisciplinary work within the IT field related to information science;
  • Experience in proposal writing, the marketing of projects to obtain research and development contracts, as well as external funding;
  • Experience in international collaboration;
  • Proven leadership, team building and communication skills.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and teambuilding experience.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • International recognition;
  • An exceptional research record in one of the Department's research specialisation fields;
  • Registered member with LIASA, the ACM, CILIP or similar professional associations;
  • NRF-rating.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates may be expected to make a 10-minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on his / her vision for the Department.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
