Lecturer in Spatial Design and/or Communication Design - Māori and Pacific Early Career Academic Pro

The Spatial and Communication Design majors within our Bachelor of Design have grown over the last five years. They are the two largest undergraduate majors in the School of Art and Design and our diverse range of graduates from both majors are now highly regarded in industry.

The Role

We have a fantastic permanent, full-time opportunity for a Lecturer in Spatial Design and/or Communication Design to utilise their PhD/doctorate and develop their career in teaching, research and service, whilst also joining AUT's bold, innovative and supportive Māori and Pacific Early Career Academic Programme .

We are seeking Māori or Pacific scholars who can teach into Spatial and/or Communication Design undergraduate majors in the Bachelor of Design, along with the Master of Design. We embrace practice-led, as well as research-informed approaches to teaching where the student experience is optimised. You will also publish actively in your specialised field - research is well supported within the School. Over time you'll also seek external research funding, engage with government, business, the professions and/or the community, and contribute to School/Faculty activities.

The School has a strong commitment to increasing appointments of Māori and Pacific staff in academic roles. We wish to recruit early career Māori or Pacific academic/s to help us expand and further diversify our teaching teams and to increase the participation and success of all students within the programmes. Further increasing the presence of Māori and Pacific staff into our School will also help shape our learning environments and underpin learning and teaching with the principles of Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori, and with Pacific worldviews (as outlined in the School's 2019 Roadmap). Increasing the number of Māori and Pacific staff will also help the School better support existing Māori and Pacific students.

Application information

We welcome applications from suitably qualified applicants of Māori or Pacific genealogical descent. We request submission of a full CV, along with a cover letter that outlines your interest in this role and addresses the following key requirements for the role:

Qualification:

• A completed PhD/doctorate (or very close to submission for examination) in one or more of spatial design, interior design, graphic design, communication design, visual communication, interaction design or UX/UI design
• PhD/doctorate graduation must have been within 3 years of application to this programme; alternatively, you will have submitted your completed thesis for examination by 7 February 2020

Research and Scholarship:

• Broad research interests that align with, and have the basis of a solid research pipeline within, contemporary aspects of Spatial or Communication design.
• More experienced candidates may already have a proven research track record with quality publications and possibly already success in external funding bids.

Teaching and Learning:

• Ideally some prior teaching and mentoring experience
• Your teaching interests will ideally include developing and delivering innovative design studio and theory learning and teaching (and postgraduate supervision) that incorporates Mātauranga Māori, and Pacific worldviews as key elements.
• This must be your first full-time, permanent academic teaching position in either a university or other tertiary education provider. You must also have no more than 5 years fixed-term contract academic teaching experience (in total) in a university or other tertiary education provider

Start Date: You must be able to start by 10 February 2020

Lecturer appointment level and salary will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
