Full time starting salary is normally in the range £50,132 to £58,089, with potential progression once in post to £75,744

Job Summary

Delivering the Business Partner role, the post holder is responsible for ensuring the effective provision of financial and operational support to the College / Professional Services and its leadership on all financial matters. The post holder will be responsible for integration of finance support activities across all aspects of the associated business. The post carries a high degree of, advisory and developmental responsibility for the professional administration of the financial services support.

The Finance Business Partner will be responsible to the Head of Finance Business Partnering, with accountability to the senior management in their allocated area of business, operating as a key member of the Finance Office.

Under the guidance of the Head of Finance Business Partnering, the Business Partner will support on a programme of change in relation to processes and reporting for the Office and other areas of the University. This will require pro-actively effecting actions to improve performance; involving working with and influencing senior staff whilst also ensuring effective financial management, control and reporting at an operational level for all activities.

Main Duties

1. Strategic and Policy Development:

Lead role in advising management and colleagues on all financial matters. This will involve having a thorough understanding of the strategic aims of the University and associated business area and the inter-relationships and dependencies across relevant activities.

Participate in the development of business strategy and, through an effective analysis and understanding of business requirements and University strategy, work as a core member of the senior management team to define and agree the strategy and priorities.

Contribute as a key member of the management team, championing and driving their area of expertise, but also understanding and supporting wider strategic need, in close collaboration with relevant colleagues.

As a member of Finance Office business partnering team, contribute and lead on the change and development of processes, systems, financial strategy, policy and reporting requirements for the Finance Business Partners.

2. Service Delivery:

Responsibility for ensuring the effective day to day financial administration across the business area. The postholder will have accountability for effective delivery of relevant services, to meet the needs of the business area and the University.

Hold the primary responsibility for maintenance and development of finance admin solutions that have a positive impact on business performance and management.

3. Service/Process Change:

Responsible for leading and driving change in relation to finance administrative support structures; evaluating existing procedures in association with other Finance Business Partners to drive consistency, simplification and efficiency.

4.Management Information and Analysis:

Understanding and Interpretation of management information for use in business decisions related to finance level initiatives and reviews

Work with the management accounting team to provide accurate and relevant information required by the business area and the Corporate Accounting team. This includes provision of annual accounts as well as budgetary and forecast information

5. Staff Management:

Responsibility for line management and ongoing development through coaching and training of junior business partner(s) in team.

Responsibility for setting the professional standard and the collaborative culture in which their College/PS team operates and acting as a role model for the team in terms of output quality, service delivery and a customer-focused ethos.

Responsible for all personnel issues for the team, referring issues to line manager/HR as appropriate and carrying out all staff reviews and appraisals.

Person Specification

Educated to at least Degree level or equivalent.

Relevant professional accountancy qualification and registration, with relevant post qualification experience in a large and complex organisation.

Knowledge of financial management in a complex organisation.

Proven ability of teams in a financial environment.

• Ability to create a motivating environment where people are challenged, developed, encouraged and supported to deliver outstanding results.

• Able to lead people as a team and to manage them to achieve delivery.


• Communication skills are essential as the post holder will deal with a wide range of Internal and external stakeholders. These include Pro-Vice Chancellors and Senior Management in respect of strategy and planning, as well as other senior corporate service staff in the context of everyday service provision and improvement.

Leading change

• Adaptable and flexible when dealing with complex situations and the unexpected.

• Ability to generate innovative solutions in response to challenges to deliver strategic change and to articulate these sharing both implications and benefits.

• Resilient and positive in response to changes.

• Able to influence both formally and informally within an organisation.

Additional information about the nature of the role

The role will have a high degree of autonomy within the policy and procedural framework of the University, and will report to the Head of Finance Business Partnering.

The role will have some strategic and operational responsibility within the structure.

The former by the role's responsibility to initiate and lead finance developments within the business either at the behest of Senior Management or the University. The latter element illustrated by the responsibility of managing a finance service delivered from various locations.

In addition the role will be required to develop a strong working relationship with other Professional Services colleagues in order to fully understand the business context in which he/she operates and ensure a coordinated approach to the support provided to the business.
