The Cancer Genomics Research Laboratory (CGR) investigates the contribution of germline and somatic genetic variation to cancer susceptibility and outcomes in support of the NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG). Working in concert with epidemiologists, biostatisticians and basic research scientists in DCEG's intramural research program, CGR provides the capacity to conduct genome-wide discovery studies and targeted regional approaches to identify the heritable determinants of various forms of cancer.

  • Participate in all facets of the sample extraction, staging and QC pipeline, including nucleic acid extraction from various sample types, sample handling, quantification, and STR profiling using a number of automation platforms and equipment
  • Use of LIMS for sample management
  • Responsible for performing, documenting and reporting results for a variety of procedures and assays in the laboratory, governed by SOPs
  • Utilize molecular biology expertise to perform assignments of highly specialized nature requiring technical proficiency, judgment, and ability to troubleshoot
  • Be skilled in use of automated liquid handlers
  • Ensure proper documentation of all laboratory processes performed in the laboratory

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (according to CHEA) in a field related to biomedical research. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of related molecular biology experience
  • Ability to carry out a wide range of laboratory techniques and troubleshoot with minimal supervision
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office products, general computer proficiency)
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

  • DNA/RNA extraction from a variety of sample types
  • Good working knowledge of LIMS
  • Experience with robotics (use and maintenance, preferably with Tecan and/other DNA extraction systems)
  • Experience with FFPE extractions
  • Experience in troubleshooting issues that arise with extraction of nucleic acids from blood, buccal and tissue samples
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize time and workload
  • Ability to work well in a team environment

  • Candidate will be working with or have the potential for exposure to infectious material(s) or Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM), requiring medical clearance and immunization in accordance with protocol requirements
  • Candidate is subject to the following environmental conditions such as working outdoors, high humidity areas indoors, dampness and chilling, dry atmospheric conditions, etc. as part of the job
