Assistant Professor of Soil Science

Department of Land, Air and Water Resources University of California, Davis

 

Title: Assistant Professor of Soil Science. The Department of Land, Air and Water Resources in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Soil Science with an emphasis in pedology and soil landscape processes. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant Professor tenure-track position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (https://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/aes).

 

Responsibilities:

The Department of Land, Air and Water Resources is seeking applicants in the field of pedology and soil landscape processes. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address how soils regulate earth system processes. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate how quantification of soil landscape relationships address critical or emerging issues related to critical zone science, geomorphology, ecological relationships, water resource sustainability, erosion and/or land degradation. The position is open to candidates with a diverse pedological toolset including expertise in fields such as mineralogy, biogeochemistry, morphometrics, geomorphology and quantitative pedology. The person hired is expected to teach 2.5 courses per year (i.e. one class being taught every other year). The course load taught will include instruction of Field Studies of Soils in California Ecosystems (SSC 105/205). This course spends 14 days in the field training students to describe soil profiles, characterize soil variability, evaluate soil suitability for land use, assess agricultural and forest productivity and reveal soil geomorphological and ecological relationships. Additional teaching responsibilities include Introductory Soil Science, a high enrollment undergraduate class emphasizing the role of soils in ecosystems (SSC 100) and Pedology (SSC 120). The appointee is expected to train graduate students via participation in graduate groups on campus. Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with extension educators and partners in allied industries.

 

Qualifications:

 

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in soil science, geology geomorphology or closely related field. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses related to the description of soils and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in pedology, geomorphology and soil-landscape relationships.

 

Salary:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
