Assistant Professor of Soil-Plant-Environment Interactions

Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis

 

Title: Assistant Professor of Soil-Plant Relations. The Department of Land, Air and Water Resources in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Soil-Plant-Environment Interactions. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant Professor tenure-track position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://www.caes.ucdavis.edu/research/aes).

 

Responsibilities: The Department of Land, Air and Water Resources is seeking applicants in the area of soil-plant-environment interactions with an emphasis on how soil interacts with plants at different scales in response to environmental perturbations, such as moisture and temperature extremes, fire, erosion. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address critical or emerging issues that focus on mechanisms of soil-plant interactions and may practices that optimize plant response to drought; plant characteristics best suited to reclaim degraded soils; effects of changing precipitation regimes on soil-plant relationships, carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions; impacts of increasing atmospheric CO2 and N deposition on plant productivity and soil carbon sequestration; and, temperature effects on plant- water use efficiency. The person hired is expected to teach 2.5 courses per year, which will include a high enrollment undergraduate class (e.g. Principles of Soil Science SSC 100), an upper division class in the area of soil-plant-environmental relations (e.g., Plant-Water-Soil Relationships HYD 124) and a graduate course (e.g., Soil-Plant Interrelationships SSC 208). The appointee will also participate in the training of graduate students in appropriate graduate groups. Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with extension educators and partners in allied industries.

 

Qualifications: PhD. In Soil Science, Agroecology, Ecohydrology, or related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses related to the position and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in soil-plant-environment interactions.

 

Salary:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
