Job Details

The Political Institutions and Elections laboratory (NIPE) at the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) is receiving applications for 1 (one) postdoctoral scholarship in order to develop a research on political representation and legislative polarization in Brazil.
This scholarship is associated with the Research Project Political institutions, patterns of executive-legislative relations and government capacity (FAPESP's Thematic Grant 2016/14525-6), directed by Professor Fernando Limongi. For more information please go to https://bv.fapesp.br/en/auxilios/96322/.
The main goal of this postdoctoral research proposal, which was pre-approved by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), is to assess how voters' preferences are taken into account by political actors when they need to make a decision.

The research should systematically test how polarization at the mass level affects the behavior of political parties and legislators in Brazil. Hence, the postdoctoral fellow should build on the findings regarding legislative behavior extensively explored in previous editions of this FAPESP's Research Project - Thematic Grant.
The starting point of the analysis is the acknowledgment of the political polarization process taking place in Brazil. The research should investigate how this process reinforces the connection between the electoral and legislative arenas. Specifically, the goal is to shed light on whether and how the attention of parliamentary action to its electoral effects is being affected by the polarization process.

The selected candidate is expected to participate in the daily and exceptional activities developed within the main research project, such as seminars and study groups. These activities take places in several universities and research centers in the state of São Paulo, namely the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), the Research Center for Comparative and International Studies at the University of São Paulo, the LegU at the State University of Campinas and the Federal University of São Carlos.
In order to fulfill the requirements regarding the scholarship, the postdoctoral fellow will be in charge of writing reports, managing data sets, participating in conferences and project's collective activities, conducting short courses for the members of the project and preparing papers that should be submitted to peer-reviewed journals.
The postdoctoral scholarship is offered by FAPESP in order to foster excellence in research centers by engaging young scholars in teaching, research, extension and, eventually, mentoring. The scholarship lasts 24 months, renewable for a further 12 months.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP's Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of BRL 7.373,10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
