Job Details

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear imaging technique widely used in oncology and neurobiological research. Decay of the radioactive tracer emits positrons, which annihilate in the nearby tissue and emits two back-to-back 511 keV photons. These photons are used to reconstruct the biological activity in the body. High spatial resolution PET is an advanced method for diagnosis and used mainly in neurology studies to exam neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or multiple sclerosis.

The BOLD-PET project is a French-German collaboration with a goal to develop an innovative high-resolution imager for human brain and preclinical studies. The detector works as a time-projection chamber and detects Cherenkov light and charge signal simultaneously (CaLIPSO concept, patented), It allows to reach 3D spatial resolution of 1 mm³ (FWHM) due to the ionization signal which is collected at the metallic pads and amplified by low-noise IDeF-X ASICs. The IDeF-X ASIC is a low noise multi-channel integrated circuit optimized for low capacitor radiation detectors (3). Each ASICs contains 32 input channels and a single analog output. The readout and programming of the ASIC is done thanks to a house-made serial protocol. Digital and analog signals can be shared between several identical ASICs to simplify hardware development.

The proposed work consists in the development of the data acquisition system for the readout, control and biasing of 8 IDeF-X ASICs for the BOLD-PET project. The data acquisition system conception includes the development of two simple analog boards:
  • The front-end board includes the ASIC and very simple passive filtering circuits.
  • The bias board includes power regulation circuits and drivers. This board will be connected to the MAGIC DAQ, a DAQ developed by IRFU based on pico-zed board.

The tasks that have to be done by the engaged engineer are the followings:
  • Firmware and software development of the MAGIC DAQ for the readout and slow control programming of IDeF-X.
  • Design and fabrication of the bias board

This is a one year fixed-term contract (CDD).
