You will be part of the on-going research project "The Political Economy of Coal Policy: Comparative Analyses of Stakeholder Strategies and Resource Industries' Embeddedness in the International Economy (COALSTAKE)", led by Prof. Kachi (Uni Basel), Dr. Duygan (Uni Basel), and Dr. Rinscheid (Uni St.Gallen). The position will also be linked to the ongoing research within SCCER CREST, one of the Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research. You will support the research team that analyzes energy stakeholders' activities related to coal policy developments in 4 countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, and Japan. Depending on the phase and the task of the project, you might be assigned to some of or all of these country cases. The position is also suitable for candidates who want to write a master's thesis eventually as part of or related to the project COALSTAKE.

Your position

Your tasks may include some of the following:
  • Reading relevant scientific literatures and writing short literature reviews.
  • Identifying name and contact details of important stakeholders.
  • Designing and setting up online and mail-in questionnaires (surveys) targeted at energy stakeholders from some of the 4 countries.
  • Building and organizing large datasets.
  • Analyzing quantitative data.
  • Undertaking administrative tasks for the team.


Your profile

You must have:
  • Strong willingness to coordinate and collaborate with the others in the team.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English.
  • Strong interest and proficiency in building and organizing large datasets.
  • Strong interest and ideally proficiency in quantitative data processing and analyses using R.
  • A bachelor's degree in Political Science, Economics, or a related Social Science field.
  • Motivation to learn new research tools.


The following skills are not strict prerequisite, but it would be a plus, if you are already familiar with some of them.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in German.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in Japanese.
  • Mendeley (Literature organization application).
  • LaTeX.
  • Qualtrics (Survey software).
