Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609, with potential progression once in post to £42,036

Background

The main role of the post holder will be to carry out research in the area of experimental investigation of flows pertinent to circulatory disorders of the human body, including but not limited to Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS). This post will be funded by a £6.3M Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)-funded PREMIERE Programme Grant led by Professor Omar Matar at Imperial College that will harness the synergy between world-leading scientists from three prestigious institutions: Imperial College (lead organization), Birmingham and University College London.

The post holder will create and disseminate knowledge through initiating and conducting original research and through publication, on how multiphase flow understanding can inform treatment of circulatory disorders. The post holder will report to Dr Daniele Vigolo and be guided by Professors Liam Grover (Director, Healthcare Technologies Institute) and Professor Mark Simmons (Birmingham Principal Investigator) in delivery of the research programme.

Summary of Role

• Plan, design and co-ordinate research activities and programmes related to the EPSRC PREMIERE programme grant

• Contribute to the development of research strategies and future funding bids related to healthcare technologies aspects of the PREMIERE programme grant

• Interpret findings and disseminate research results e.g. in steering meetings, conferences and in learned journals

• Guide PhD students and supervise MSc/MEng research student projects

• Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities, widening participation, schools outreach or similar activities at School level or further within the University

Main Duties/Responsibilities

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

• Conduct own and original research

• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required related to the PREMIERE project

• Contribute to writing bids for research funding

• Analyse and interpret data

• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding

• Disseminate research findings for publication at leading conferences and at research seminars etc

• Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline

• Undertake management/administration arising from research

• Contribute to School research-related activities and research-related administration

• Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader

• Collect research data via flow experiments on model circulatory networks and collect appropriate anonymised data on circulatory disorders via links with the Healthcare Technologies Institute, using a variety of methods

• Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

• Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research

• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification

• First degree in areas of Biochemical Engineering or Biology and a PhD equivalent degree in a relevant specialism e.g. microfluidics, biomedical engineering

• High level analytical capability

• Ability to communicate complex information clearly

• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones

• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively

• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

• Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project

• Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
