Job Summary

To contribute to the delivery of the School and Departmental strategy by leading, developing and contributing to research activities and undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. To maintain and develop research, taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and PhD supervision and provide academic leadership in the Department of Accounting.

The Department of Accounting sits within an internationally-focused Business School offering programmes across the full range of Business School disciplines. The School has been a major player in business education for more than a century and it continues to invest in its academic staff and facilities as it works towards its ambition of becoming a Top Ten UK and internationally recognised Business School. It also holds (with just a handful of the world's business schools), the gold standard of 'triple-crown' accreditation from the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), AMBA (Association of MBAs) and EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System). The School opened a state-of-the-art Postgraduate Teaching Centre in 2016 and is currently in the last stage of a new £25m extension and refurbishment to University House, home to BBS staff. The School comprises six departments and employs over 200 academic staff, around 80 professional services staff and teaches over 5000 students.

The Department of Accounting has currently 28 members of staff and is one of six departments within Birmingham Business School. The department has a vibrant research culture and prioritises collegiality among its colleagues. It has organised research activities around reading groups, seminars and conferences. Research in the Department of Accounting adopts a wide range of interdisciplinary interpretive and critical approaches to offer insights on social and environmental accounting, accounting history, corporate reporting, taxation, public sector accounting, management accounting, audit, accountability, and governance. Together with participation in school research centres such as the Centre for Tax Governance, Lloyds Banks Centre for Responsible Business and the Centre for Household Savings & Asset Management, the Department aims to provide research capable of shaping the policy and academic agendas.

Colleagues are currently working on diverse topics including: Accounting calculations from a social and organisational perspective; accountability and corporate reporting focussing on the relationship between accounting and the environment; accounting regulation and in particular the process of regulation of private and public sector; financial accounting and reporting, accounting education and in particular professional integrity and ethics.

The Department is seeking to welcome a colleague who has research interests that either complements or strengthens existing areas of expertise.

Main Duties

• Publish high quality research in leading international journals;
• Make major contributions to the broader theoretical and/or methodological debates of the discipline through rigorous scholarship and/or original or impactful research which further develop the University's reputation in the Accounting subject area;
• Provide research leadership, through leading bids for external research grants which develop and sustain research support in the field and advance the reputation of the Department, School and the University;
• To contribute to debates on the development of Accounting beyond the University, and critically at the interface of University and Accounting profession in order to foster engagement, influence and impact;
• To provide expert advice and mentoring to colleagues and to supervise and examine postgraduate students;
• To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and module/programme leadership;
• Contribute to the planning, teaching, examining and marking of undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
• To ensure that the teaching activity achieves the educational quality standards of the School and University;
• To contribute to the determination of the academic standards framework throughout the University;
• To develop and/or sustain key external partnerships which underpin the delivery of teaching and research collaborations;
• To promote and market the work of the Department, School, College and Centres in the Accounting subject area both nationally and internationally.
• To undertake a strategic important leadership role as identified by the Head of Department, School or College.

Person Specification

Essential

• A PhD in a relevant field;
• An international reputation for excellence in research and teaching demonstrated through an outstanding publications record;
• Evidence of an outstanding and sustained international research profile with significant and substantial outputs of international quality;
• Research interests which complement or strengthen the existing research interests of colleagues within the department;
• Established record of attracting external funding;
• Track record of attracting external funding;
• Track record of successful supervision of PhDs to completion;
• Established track record as an experienced and innovative education leader;
  • Evidence of developing and delivering excellence and enhancement in design and delivery of teaching, both undergraduate and postgraduate, which delivers research-intensive teaching that engages students
  • Evidence of activities which enhance the student learning experience (for example in enhancing the curriculum, learning activities/teaching materials, assessment, evaluating the impact on the student learning experience) or which enhance the teaching and learning performance of colleagues.
• Excellent presentation skills
• A collegial attitude;
• Evidence of outstanding academic leadership and a proven ability to lead, mentor, develop and motivate colleagues;

Desirable

• Experience with international collaborations;
• Involvement with professional associations and institutes and accreditation bodies;
• Willingness to engage with the media.
