Job Details

Applications are invited to join a multidisciplinary team to study the role of the immune system in spreading alpha-synuclein through the brain. Experience in neuroscience, particularly with regard to Parkinson's disease and inflammation biology is desirable. Candidates will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Biological Sciences.

Short description of the project: People living with Parkinson's disease have aggregates of a protein called alpha-synuclein in their brain. As Parkinson's disease progresses, alpha synuclein spreads through the brain, causing damage to neurons that control movement, balance and speech. Neurons have receptors that can bind to alpha-synuclein fibrils, which help to spread the disease, one of these receptors is called FcγRIIB. In cells isolated from the brain, blocking this receptor prevents the binding and spreading of alpha-synuclein to adjacent neurons. In this research project, we propose to test if we can block the spread of the neurotoxic alpha synuclein fibrils in a mouse model and if we can develop an antibody therapy that can prevent, or even halt, Parkinson's disease.

The post is available from 1st October 2019 for a period of 5 months.

Informal enquiries about the post can be made to Professor Jessica Teeling: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/biosci/about/staff/jt8.page
