Contribute to the project Fluoride glass fabrication as a material scientist within the Institute of Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS)

The vision of the Institute of Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) is to pursue a transdisciplinary approach that brings together experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists and medical researchers to create new sensing and measurement technologies in order to solve major challenges.

The Fibres and Photonics Materials research group at IPAS, through the School of Physical Sciences, has recently secured funding for the prototyping of an improved method for fluoride glass melting and processing to decrease the transmission for this glass type. The project aims to develop and fabricate fluoride glass fibres with significantly improved optical quality to enable use of these fibres for a range of applications such as lasers and new light sources in the mid-infrared spectral range.

We are seeking a researcher with a background in materials science to drive the development and fabrication of the fluoride glass fibres.

To be successful you will need:
  • PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in materials science/engineering
  • A commitment to research excellence in glass science and development
  • Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with professional and industry bodies, government and members of the community
