The Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College was established in 1983, as a part of the University's Faculty of Health Sciences in Pakistan. It attaches great emphasis to the professional, personal and intellectual development of faculty and students, so that its graduates become contributory members and leaders of society.

The programmes offered by the Medical College are tailored to international standards in curriculum, student engagement and assessment, and aim to develop clinical competence in community settings and hospitals, as well as the assessment of health and prevention of disease in communities through primary health-care programmes.

The PhD in Health Sciences programme at the Faculty of Health Sciences is central to AKU's mission to create knowledge which is relevant to the developing world. The programme contributes to the development of a new generation of researchers and leaders, in our pursuit of becoming a truly research-led institution of the 21st century. It is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programme that includes Biological Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Nursing, and Population & Public Health as broad areas of study and research.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the PhD in Health Sciences programme, you will provide executive level administrative support to the programme and undertake the following responsibilities:
  • serve as point person for all matters related to the PhD in Health Sciences programme
  • ensure implementation of all the policies related to the programme for maintaining academic excellence
  • ensure smooth functioning of the PhD in Health Sciences programme office
  • be the liaison with various University sections / departments for smooth running of the programme
  • coordinate with Office of the Registrar for student induction, admissions, progression, graduation and other related matters
  • work with the Graduate Studies Office for approval of internal, national external, and international external examiners for thesis evaluation of PhD candidates and open thesis defense
  • handle overall programme functions in terms of student affairs, course offerings and execution of the devised academic strategy
  • manage logistics of the programme i.e. coordinate with administration, purchase and marketing departments to meet programme specific requirements
  • develop appropriate communication channels for the programme in liaison with the concerned stakeholders
  • ensure effective and efficient examination processes in line with the agreed / established practices and protocols
  • ensure compliance with defined rules, regulations and policies, both institutional and national, throughout every aspect of the programme
  • maintain and update a systematic database of confidential students and alumni record
  • provide advice to prospective and current students regarding all aspects of the programme, admissions processes, graduate policies, administrative procedures, degree requirements, financial matters and placement opportunities, and address issues pertaining to international students
  • assist the Director with matters related to the PhD in Health Sciences Programme Committee, and Implementation Committee, including but not limited to calling the meetings, setting up of agendas, preparing briefing papers, taking minutes and following up on matters emanating from deliberations at these meeting.


Requirements

You should have:
  • at least a Bachelor's degree, however, Master's will be preferred
  • a minimum of five years of related work experience or comparable transferable experience
  • excellent problem solving skills and initiative in taking on issues that require resolution or solving
  • the ability to demonstrate sound judgment in challenging and sensitive situations
  • excellent written and verbal communication in English and Urdu
  • strong organisational, project management and planning skills
  • strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
