Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
National Institutes of Health
The Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology (LCIM), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is soliciting applications for a position as a staff clinician in the area of neuroimmunological diseases.
LCIM conducts clinical and basic science and epidemiologic research into human immunologic, inflammatory, and infectious diseases with an aim to develop novel diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches to manage and, ideally, cure these diseases.
The goal of the Neuroimmunological Diseases Section (NDS) is to gain understanding of the mechanisms that cause central nervous system (CNS) injury and those that have neuroprotective functions and mediate repair to develop effective therapies for human neuroimmunological diseases, especially multiple sclerosis (MS). As such, clinical work in the NDS is related to investigator-initiated, proof-of-principle clinical trials, which are investigating major pathophysiological mechanisms in MS. The focus is on comprehensive, multimodal analysis of disease progression, as measured by clinical, para-clinical, imaging, and molecular/cellular biomarker modalities and on development and validation of data-driven tools of clinical utility, such as novel diagnostic and prognostic tests and new clinical outcomes.
The staff clinician would join a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, data analysts, and support personnel and would be expected to take a leading role in supervising day-to-day clinical activities of the NDS. This is a full-time position with approximately 60% direct clinical and 40% research activities (e.g., evaluation of MRI outcomes, digital health-related novel quantitative clinical outcomes acquired with smartphones in a patient-autonomous manner, and molecular/biological biomarker studies). The opportunities for skill development include bioinformatics, laboratory skills, clinical trial methodology, and MRI analyses.
Qualifications
The applicant must have an M.D. or equivalent, be board certified in neurology, and meet the requirements for credentialing to practice as a staff physician in the NIH Clinical Center. An ideal candidate will have experience in clinical research and/or in conducting clinical trials and demonstrate a keen interest in neuroimmunological diseases or MS, either by subspecialty training or by experience/publication record. Salary will be commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.
