Supervisory Mathematical Statistician, Surveillance Research Program

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), the largest research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), seeks a senior scientist to serve as Supervisory Mathematical Statistician in the Surveillance Research Program, Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS). The division provides national scientific leadership and oversight of NCI-funded research in the areas of cancer epidemiology, surveillance, health care delivery, survivorship, and behavioral science. DCCPS is also committed to addressing health disparities through transdisciplinary research.

The Supervisory Mathematical Statistician will serve in the Surveillance Research Program (SRP) within DCCPS at NCI and may also coordinate activities across NIH and among other federal agencies.

This challenging and highly visible position requires broad scientific expertise, a passion for public service, commitment to collaboration, and an ability to develop effective strategies to identify gaps in research and overcome barriers to scientific progress. We are seeking a senior level-candidate with a professional mastery of advanced mathematical and statistical theory and methods for biomedical research or equivalent education and experience. 

The candidate will serve as a senior advisor to the SRP Associate Director and will direct a program of study and research in the development of new statistical measures, including research having direct relevance to methods of complex analysis of cancer survival within a population. This position will also require the management of a high-level initiative on the evaluation and release of population-based cancer data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program to researchers and the general public. The incumbent will be intimately involved in several major reporting activities, including the annual release of the SEER Cancer Statistics Review and the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. The incumbent will also be expected to provide expertise and oversight in breast cancer incidence, mortality, survival, and prevalence trends to support the Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network. The candidate is also expected to conduct and oversee cutting-edge studies that further the state of the art in statistics, leading to new concepts and methodologies for application to cancer surveillance research.  Information about the division is available at https://cancercontrol.cancer.gov/

Position Requirements: Applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree (e.g., PhD and/or MD) in an academic field related to mathematics or epidemiology appropriate to the work of this position OR equivalent. Excellent knowledge of statistics, mathematical modeling/projections, methods for calculating measures of the cancer burden in a population. To successfully carry out the responsibilities of this position, candidates must have a comprehensive understanding of cancer surveillance, epidemiology, oncology, and data quality, and broad knowledge of basic, clinical, prevention, behavioral, and translational research). Applicants must have a thorough working knowledge of grants and contracts administration and operations, and must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationship with division staff, and with scientists, administrators, and educations in organizations both within and outside of NIH. This position will be filled under a Title 42(f) excepted service appointment.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.
