Job Purpose

To be part of a team within Metallurgy and Materials and the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing (RSMRC) that works with antimicrobial peptides and develop an antimicrobial ink that could be 3D printed on medical surfaces.

• Work within a research project funded by NIHR RSMRC

• Operate within area of specialism and particularly develop antimicrobial inks based on antimicrobial peptides

• Use of specialised analytical equipment and interpret research findings and results

• Contribute to generating funding for the project

• Contribute to IP generation and public understanding

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop antimicrobial inks based on antimicrobial peptides

• Work closely with a team of researchers that have developed already antimicrobial peptides and contribute to the project's progression

• Analyse and interpret data

• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding

• Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where

• appropriate to the discipline

• Contribute to writing bids for research funding

• Disseminate research findings for publication

• Contribute to developing new antimicrobial methodologies

• Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific

• experimentation, literature reviews

• Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

• Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research

Person Specification

• A PhD in materials science, chemistry, biology (biology related to biomaterials), bioinspired structures, 3D bioprinting or working towards

• High level analytical capability

• Ability to communicate complex information clearly

• Ability to develop 3D printing methods appropriate for peptide based hydrogels or polymers

• Experience with development of bioinspired structures

• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary project and work in the interface of materials-chemistry-biology
