Job Details

The aim of the EPSRC programme grant ADEPT Advanced Devices is to use electrodeposition to structure semiconductors for device applications including thermoelectrics, phase change memory and IR sensors.

This post aims to further develop our established position in the electrochemical and evaporation-induced deposition of aligned mesoporous silicas and to deposit a range of materials in nanowire form using the mesoporous silicas as templates. The post will also explore the possibilities for depositing mesoporous silica onto novel functional substrates, e.g. graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, to produce new devices and sensors. A range of characterisation techniques (microscopy, scattering and spectroscopy) will need to be applied to understand these systems. Hence you will have relevant skills at the interface between materials chemistry and electrochemistry.

The post is within the materials chemistry team led by Prof. A. Hector, but you will also interact strongly with the other research teams within the ADEPT programme across three universities. These are based in Southampton Chemistry, Physics, and Electronics &Computer Science, Nottingham Chemistry and Warwick Physics.

You will have PhD or professional qualification and experience in materials chemistry, electrochemistry or closely aligned fields (or within six months of completion), and must have strong communications skills with a proven ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Andrew Hector ( A.L.Hector@soton.ac.uk ).

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in Chemistry. In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science we were awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award in 2014 a and a second Silver award in 2017. Chemistry gives full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, onsite childcare facilities For further information please visit https://www.southampton.ac.uk/chemistry/about/Equality/index.page

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and in the top 10 of the UK's research-intensive universities. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has recently been awarded the Platinum EcoAward. Our vision is to embed the principles of sustainability into all aspects of our individual and collective work, integrating sustainable development into our business planning, policy-making, and professional activities.
