Full time starting salary is normally in the range £27,511 to £30,046. With potential progression once in post to £33,797 a year.

Job Summary

This post is funded until March 2022 by a CRUK Programme Award and will support the work within the Beggs research group (a.k.a. the Surgical Research Laboratory). The Beggs lab runs a broad programme of cutting edge translational research encompassing genomics, cellular models, genome editing, drug screening and a bioinformatics dry lab on a range of cancer types and benign diseases.

We are looking for a highly organised, enthusiastic and motivated individual who wants to help manage a large, exciting multi-disciplinary laboratory environment. The post holder will be expected to undertake novel, cutting-edge, laboratory-based research within a broad based translational research programme, to provide essential research support for Dr Beggs's group and to manage the day-to-day running of the laboratory. The role holder will be collaborating with other stakeholders such as members of the group, and wider University, clinical staff at local trusts and external investigators.

Research
The role holder will provide a high level of expertise in a range of technical skills to support the research in Dr Beggs' group. The role holder will develop and adapt techniques and analyse research data as appropriate. These techniques will include, but not exclusively:

Molecular genetics
• Routine molecular biology procedures including primer design, qPCR, DNA/RNA isolation, Sanger sequencing, pyrosquencing, expression plasmid generation
• Purification and quantification of nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) from human tissue, blood and other body fluid samples
• Submission for Next Generation Sequencing to Genomics Birmingham
• Next generation sequencing library preparation including single cell and long read sequencing using Oxford Nanopore (training can be provided for this)

Cell Culture
• Routine maintenance of cell lines
• Cell interventions (transfections, viral production and delivery, treatments, etc.)
• Maintenance of cryostore database
• Cell line quality control including mycoplasma screening and STR analyses

• Cell and protein analysis
• Immunfluorescence staining and Fluorescence microscopy
• Western blotting, immunoprecipitation
• Immunohistochemistry of human tumour samples

Main Duties/Responsibilities

The role holder will be required to:
• Keep accurate records of all experiments, result evaluations and summaries
• Contribute to preparation of academic publications and present key points of research outputs to a wide audience
• Participate with both internal and external networks for the exchange of information such as Technical Academy, local seminars and national/international meetings
• Provide expert technical guidance, as required, to support staff and students within research group and the wider department
• Optimise, develop, and troubleshoot techniques. Provide training in, and SOPs for, such techniques.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANISATION
The post holder will contribute to general administrative tasks relevant to the research.
These include:
• Maintaining stocks of consumables, creating purchase order requisitions and using a web based ordering system. Recording financial expenditure.
• Organising and participating in general lab duties
• Ensuring that the facilities are maintained in a clean, functional and safe condition, reporting any problems through the appropriate channels.
• Ensuring the best use of equipment through booking systems, if appropriate
• Dealing with induction and training of new laboratory members as appropriate
• Dealing with/referring as appropriate any problems with equipment or services
• Any other duties commensurate with the grade and skill base of the role holder as directed by Technical Manager

HEALTH AND SAFETY/ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
• Ensuring all facility users, working within the area of responsibility, comply with all basic University / College Health & Safety policies This will include compliance by all staff with current rules governing work with COSHH, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), biological samples, human tissue etc. Ensure all required assessments are in place approved and up to date.
• Maintaining records both paper and computer based as appropriate.
• Carrying out regular maintenance processes such as flushing eye wash stations as appropriate and ensuring records are maintained.
• Reporting any breaches or non-compliance with H&S procedures to the Technical Manager or College Safety Adviser.
• Upholding the correct waste disposal stream as governed by College and local policy for laboratory, recycled and general waste
• Adopt a proactive attitude to assisting with and implementing carbon reduction and energy saving measures

OTHER DUTIES
• To actively engage in the Personal Development Process
• To contribute at a level appropriate with the grade, to internal and external audit procedures, and to regulatory inspections
• Assist the Technical Manager in identifying and tracking items held on the University asset register
• In collaboration with the Technical Manager or Academic Supervisor the post holder will take an active role in the training and mentoring process for junior or newly appointed staff/students
• In collaboration with the Technical Manager assist in the implementation and where appropriate, make suggestions to comply with the University carbon reduction strategy and the effective use of energy

Person Specification
• Extensive proven substantial practical and technical experience of a wide range of techniques as stated above and Good Laboratory Practice gained through extensive experience and formal qualification
• A professional qualification in an appropriate subject or extensive equivalent experience in a similar role
• Positive service attitude and shows courtesy in dealing with others
• Proven ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements
• Proven ability to work independently but function as part of a team
• Proven ability to understand customer requirements and ensure solutions are developed to meet their needs and provide advice and guidance
• Proven ability to diagnose/resolve problems and suggest solutions in own area, whilst having regard to the local and wider interests
• Able to communicate effectively with colleagues, collaborators, suppliers etc
• Knowledge of current relevant H&S policies
• Proficiency in commonly used software packages and in depth knowledge of analysis software
• Willingness to work towards professional registration or already hold Science Council professional registration
• Trained in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
