Job Role

We wish to appoint a Research Associate to work on the Mental Skills Training for Life™ (MST4Life™) project with St Basils. This is a mixed-methods project that involves developing, delivering, and evaluating a positive youth development programme for young people who are homeless and living in supported accommodation to help them move on into education, employment, and training. The Principal Investigator is Dr Jennifer Cumming of the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences.

The Research Associate will be required to assist all stages of the research project and work as part of team to achieve the planned objectives and outputs. This includes general administrative tasks, delivering MST4Life™ sessions, and report writing and dissemination of findings to academic and non-academic stakeholders. The post holder will also contribute to the evaluation of the MST4Life™ programme by reviewing the literature, collecting quantitative and qualitative data, and obtaining secondary data on engagement with Education, Employment, and Training from Housing Services.

The successful postholder will have at least a first degree in a relevant subject area such as Sport and Exercise Sciences, Psychology, Social Work (minimum 2.1 degree classification) and able to demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic approach to working effectively with others, particularly young people who are 16 to 25 years. They will have confidence in using quantitative and/or qualitative methods, be hardworking and industriousness, and have excellent oral communication, time management, and organisational skills. They also will be able to take a flexible approach to working and work independently with minimum supervision. It would be an advantage to have knowledge of mental skills/life skills, positive youth development, and/or strengths-based approaches to working with individuals. Because the postholder will be working unsupervised with vulnerable young people, we will request a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Collect research data through literature review, questionnaires, a range of interview methods (e.g., diary rooms, 1:1 interviews, focus groups), and secondary data.

• Actively engage in and assist with the delivery of MST4Life sessions with young people aged 16 to 25 years

• To support in the organisation of activities, including the development or adaptation of session materials (e.g., learning materials and activities)

• Process (e.g., transcription) and analyse research data as directed

• Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

• Liaise and collaborate with the MST4Life™ team and other project stakeholders

• Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the intervention and associated research

Person Specification

• BSc in Sport and Exercise Sciences, Psychology or a related degree

• Demonstrate an interest in working with young people who are homeless and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds

• Familiarity with mental skills/life skills, positive youth development, and/or strengths-based approaches

• Practical experience of applying relevant research skills and techniques

• Experience in presenting information or delivering interventions to different audiences

• Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively in reports and presentations

• Ability to access and organise project resources successfully

• Ability to develop own research ideas

• Ability to work independently using own initiative

• Excellent communication skills

• Excellent time management and organisational skills

• Proficient in the use of generic IT packages, for example Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
