Since its creation in 1954, The Bureau for Economic Research (BER) has built up a global reputation as one of South Africa's foremost economic research institutions. The BER''s research mainly comprises the conduct of business surveys and macroeconomic forecasting. The institute is part of Stellenbosch University, but finances itself from the provision of services and other products to clients in the private and public sector, commissioned research and sponsorships.
  • Conducting research and writing reports on (1) the macro economy, (2) the results of the BER's business surveys and (3) as commissioned by clients;
  • Forecasting responsibilities;
  • Providing support services to clients.


Additional duties at the level of senior economist:
  • Doing in-house presentations for clients on the macro economy;
  • Independently initiating, managing and finishing new services, products and research;
  • Interacting with the media, foreign investors and multilateral organisations such as the IMF;
  • Contributing to the sustained improvement of the quality of the BER''s research;
  • Mentoring trainee economists;
  • Providing informed inputs to debates on South Africa's economic policy.


Junior Economist:
  • At least an honours degree in Economics;
  • Excellent knowledge of macroeconomic relationships and developments in South Africa;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • Ability to work accurately and independently;
  • Capable of working in a team;
  • Capacity to work under pressure;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.


Economist:
  • At least an honours degree in Economics;
  • At least three years' work experience;
  • Ability to communicate with clients and maintain good relations;
  • Excellent knowledge of macroeconomic relationships and developments in South Africa;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • Ability to work accurately and independently;
  • Capable of working in a team;
  • Capacity to work under pressure;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.


Additional requirements for the senior economist position:
  • At least a Master's degree in Economics;
  • At least five years' work experience in writing reports and doing presentations on the macro economy for clients in the private and / or public sector;
  • Proven ability to finish research projects independently and to manage a team to complete research projects.
  • Proficiency in EViews and / or similar econometric software;
  • Further academic qualification in economics and statistics with specialisation in macroeconomics or econometrics;
  • A strong research profile in the form of applied and/or published research;Experience in the South African economic policy environment would also be an advantage;
  • Strong public profile and credibility.
