The University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory invites applications for an immediate position in the area of research, design and development of soft robotic implantable medical devices

This Research Associate position is part of a project funded by the Wellcome Trust which will develop a soft robotic implantable larynx device. The goal is to restore breathing, swallowing and vocalization in patients that have had their larynx removed, for example due to laryngeal cancer.

This research position will include the design, development and evaluation of prototype replacement devices and assisting with pre-clinical tests of the devices. This is expected to include soft robotic actuators, smart materials, electro-active polymers, active compliant structures, soft robotic mechanisms and 3d fabrication; particular strengths of the Bristol Soft Robotics Research Group.

The project will be based at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory ( www.brl.ac.uk ) the largest centre for multidisciplinary research in the UK. It will operate within the Bristol Soft Robotics Group ( http://www.bristol.ac.uk/softlab , @SoftLabBristol ), a vibrant and exciting group with over 35 members. and you will use dedicated facilities and expertise from the Robotics Lab in addition to those of the faculties of Engineering and Science at the University of Bristol and project partners. You will also work closely with world experts in the fields of ENT surgery and bio-compatible materials at Royal Nose, Ear and Throat Hospital, London, and University College London.

You will hold (or will be expected to obtain soon) a strong PhD in a discipline relevant to the project. In addition to a strong research track record you will also have excellent communication skills, and the enthusiasm to work in a friendly multi-disciplinary team.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place soon after application closure, and the anticipated start will be as soon as possible thereafter. This post is full time to 31 December 2020.
