Job Details

University of Portsmouth

The School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed individual to a new 0.5fte Teaching Fellow position in Strength and Conditioning. The School is within the Faculty of Science and Health and holds strong teaching, research and innovation links with many areas of the Faculty. The School performed well in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) and is hopeful of continued success in the forthcoming REF2021, ranks amongst the leading Sport and Exercise Science providers in the UK, and has consistently boasted excellent student satisfaction. At an institutional level, Portsmouth was rated Gold in the UK Government's Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and ranked in the top 20 UK universities for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS). The Economist also rates the University of Portsmouth as number one in the UK for boosting graduate salaries, with 97.5 per cent of graduates working, or in further study six months after they graduated.

The successful candidate will make a significant teaching contribution to the School and contribute to our existing, and emerging, school-wide themes: Extreme Environments, Occupational and Organisational Performance, Human Performance and, Physical Activity, Health, and Rehabilitation.

The appointee will engage in the full range of duties associated with a Teaching Fellow. These include teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, and a capability to contribute to the vocational relevance of our curriculum pathways in accordance with University strategy.
In addition to contributing to our undergraduate and postgraduate provision, we are particularly interested in receiving applications for each position from individuals with wide-ranging practitioner experience and a capability to supervise students in placement settings. It is also essential for the successful candidate to hold the appropriate professional qualification/s.

Whilst the post advertised is a Teaching Fellow position, the intention is for the Department of Sport and Recreation to employ the successful post-holder for the remaining 0.5fte in a 'practitioner role'. In line with the new UoP Sport Strategy (including new Sports Facilities), the practitioner role will facilitate support for the BUCS Sports Clubs, UoP Sport Scholars, and broader Sport and Recreation activities (including, for example, TASS athletes).

Information on the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science:
The University of Portsmouth has delivered sport, health and exercise-related programmes for 25 years. With several recent appointments, the school comprises ~35 academic staff, ~800 Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught students, and ~30 postgraduate research students. Recent investments have supported our student learning experiences (which has contributed to the outstanding graduate-level first destination career statistics), our research environment, and we have planned physical and estate developments to extend beyond the current accommodation within the Spinnaker Building. The school enjoys a supportive environment for the development of excellence in its staff and students, and holds an Athena SWAN bronze award, in addition to adhering to the Stonewall charter across the University.

For further information regarding the position please contact Professor Richard Thelwell (Head of School; richard.thelwell@port.ac.uk ).

Please note that this job does not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) to qualify for an employer-sponsored visa and therefore unfortunately we are unable to consider applications from candidates who require sponsorship to work in the UK.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this level in this area.
