Job Details

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is passionate about the principles and applications of Science and Technology in all its forms and strives to be excellent in research, teaching and innovation.

Cellular and Molecular Biosciences are an integral part of the Department's research portfolio which was a significant part of the University's success in the REF2014 exercise, placing Northumbria in the top 50 UK universities for research power. Working within the Department of Applied Sciences, in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, you will provide expertise in the area of Cellular and Molecular Sciences, to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. This will include designing, developing and delivering high quality teaching provision, research to produce high quality academic outputs and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject area.

The Department has particular strengths in biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology and neuroscience, as well as a history of interdisciplinary research, often in collaboration with industry and with UKRI co-funding. Whilst the successful applicant will need to be able to demonstrate their ability to teach within the area of Cellular and Molecular Sciences, their own research interests can lie more generally within the above discipline areas. Details of our research groups and themes can be found here: https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/applied-sciences/research/ .

The Department has state-of-the-art facilities for research, including recently refurbished well equipped laboratories for biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, microscopy suite (including fluorescence and laser capture) and tissue culture, complemented by high performance computing and dedicated facilities for metabolomics, proteomics and genomics (including MySeq and PacBio sequencing platforms).

All applicants must hold a first degree and be qualified to doctoral level in a specialism relevant to the subject area, with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. Evidence of research outputs which are of high quality and are consistent with criteria for inclusion in future Research Excellence Framework submissions and a proven ability to deliver high quality, research led teaching is essential for the role.

Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with expertise in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology or Neuroscience.
