Job Details

Northumbria University's Department of Psychology is seeking applications from excellent candidates whose research complements or builds upon our existing strengths, and who possess the skills and abilities to develop our trans-national education activity in line with the University strategy. Our current research themes are: Brain, Performance and Nutrition; Health and Wellbeing; Psychology and Communication Technologies; Cognition and Language; Perception, Evolution and Behaviour. The Department also plays a leading role in two university-wide multidisciplinary research themes: Integrated Health, and Digital Living.

You will provide expertise in cognitive or health psychology to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. This will include designing, developing and delivering high quality teaching provision, undertaking research to produce quality academic outputs and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject area.

Our Departmental resources include: DEXA body composition scanner, 3DMD photogrammetry body scanner, 14-camera Vicon motion capture suite, SR Research and Tobii eye tracking equipment, NIRS, transcranial magnetic stimulation, an immersive virtual reality suite, a two-bedroom sleep laboratory, psychophysiologic assessment tools (e.g. GSR, EEG, EMG), and wet labs for taking human samples. Our popular Psychology courses cater to a vibrant student community of around 150 Foundation Year, 1000 Undergraduate, and 150 postgraduate students. The Department actively works with all academic staff to ensure teaching activity does not come at the expense of research time, and promotes engagement with sabbaticals to facilitate the development of grant submissions and collaborative projects.

You will have a PhD in Psychology or a related area. You will have evidence of research outputs which are of high quality and are consistent with criteria for inclusion in future Research Excellence Framework submissions and a proven ability to deliver high quality research-led teaching within Psychology. You will have subject expertise with specialist knowledge gained through research activity or consultancy. Membership (or eligibility for membership) of a relevant professional body is desirable.

Applications from candidates with expertise in cognitive development, social cognition and decision making or expertise in psychobiological underpinnings of health interventions related to sport, exercise and lifestyle are particularly welcome, but we would also encourage excellent applicants from any psychological discipline to apply.

For informal enquiries about this post please contact Dr Mark Moss ( mark.moss@northumbria.ac.uk ).

To apply for this vacancy please click 'Apply Now', and submit a covering letter, CV including research / education statements, and grants and publications list. Please highlight your highest quality research outputs (please indicate a rank from 1 to 5) up to a maximum of 5, since 1 January 2014. In addition, candidates are asked to provide copies of the top 2 research outputs (Journal / book chapter / practice-based portfolio). Where possible candidates are asked to combine all of these documents into a single file.

Northumbria University takes pride in, and values, the quality and diversity of our staff. We welcome applications from all members of the community. The University holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award in recognition of our commitment to improving employment practices for the advancement of gender equality and is a member of the Euraxess network, which delivers information and support to professional researchers.
