Job Details

Northumbria University seeks to appoint a full-time Senior Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, with a preference for candidates working in the field of Language and Education. We seek to appoint a candidate with an excellent research profile, who will make a strong contribution to our submission to REF 2021, and who has strong experience of teaching English Language at all levels up to postgraduate. The appointee will work within the wider English group in the Humanities Department.

The Humanities Department is focused strongly on excellence in research and teaching. We have a commitment to outward-facing work, as reflected in community engagement and knowledge exchange with different partners. Our Department brings together 80 academic staff and 800 students in American Studies, History, Music, English Literature, English Language and Creative Writing. Undergraduate students in American Studies, History and English come to us with the highest average entry qualifications for these subjects across the modern university sector.

English Language and Linguistics is a diverse subject group which undertakes research and teaching on a wide range of topics from language evolution and change to language spread and metaphor, with particular strengths in cognitive linguistics, language learning and teaching, and the psychology of language. While most of our research focuses on English (including historical varieties and world Englishes), our staff members have also worked on or have an active interest in a number of other languages, including Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, French, German and Polish. The group has a strongly international orientation. We are involved in collaborative projects with researchers in Japan, China, Germany and Poland, and have many international students and vibrant teaching links with universities and higher education institutions in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Libya, and many European countries.

As a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in English Language you will work as part of multi-disciplinary teams, with responsibility for contributing to an exceptional student experience through the delivery of teaching, research, business and enterprise engagement activity. You will actively engage in research and related activities, which will inform curriculum development and delivery and raise the profile of the Department, Faculty and University nationally and internationally.
