Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be required to:
  • Support UP staff and students with geospatial data, software, research and mapping support;
  • Liaise with IT support regarding the geospatial software and computer labs on campus;
  • Prepare marketing material, such as posters, flyers and bookmarks, for departmental marketing purposes;
  • Participate in the administration of the Department.


Minimum Requirements:
  • BScHons Geoinformatics or BScHons with GIS modules at Hons level;
  • Two years' experience in:
    • Geospatial software to do data input, cleaning, manipulation, analysis, image processing, and map design, layout & output;
    • Loading, manipulating and extracting data from relational database management systems;
    • Office type products to producing spreadsheets, documents and presentations;
    • Presenting to an audience;
    • Using GIS to solve problems;
    • Geospatial data in different projections and coordinating reference systems.


Required Competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):

Knowledge:
  • Geographic information science / Geoinformatics;
  • Geospatial metadata principles for data sharing;
  • Cartography;
  • Remote sensing;
  • Projections and coordinate reference systems;
  • Using GIS to solve problems;
  • Web mapping;
  • An avid interest in new developments and staying abreast of latest developments.

Technical Competencies:
  • ArcGIS or QGIS software;
  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Transforming geospatial data between different projections and coordinate reference systems;
  • Google Earth and .KML/.KMZ files;
  • ENVI / ERDAS IMAGINE or GRASS software;
  • GIS project management;
  • Geoportal administration, e.g. in GeoNode or GeoNetwork;
  • Relational database management systems, such as PostGIS, Oracle or SQLServer;
  • CorelDraw, Adobe Acrobat, Inkscape or equivalent;
  • R or MATLAB or Python;
  • Development of web maps and geoportals;
  • Presenting to an audience, e.g. guest lectures or conference presentations;
  • Using GIS to solve problems.

Behavioural Competencies:
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to be meticulous and persist (quality control);
  • Be innovative and creative with visualisations (map outputs) with a sense for design and the use of colours;
  • Be able to work under pressure;
  • Generally good computer skills.


Added Advantages and Preferences:
  • MSc Geoinformatics or MSc with strong GIS component;
  • Registered as a geomatics practitioner with the South African Geomatics Council, or eligible to register as such;
  • Experience in:
    • CorelDraw, Adobe Acrobat or Inkscape for layout and design of posters and maps;
    • R or MATLAB or Python for spatial statistics and analysis;
    • Development of web maps and geoportals in e.g. mapbox, ArcGIS Online or with GeoServer;
    • Supercross Census 2001 & 2011 database software by StatsSA.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
