Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Supervising the day-to-day operations in the scenic workshop;
  • Supervising workshop staff in carrying out the responsibilities of their operational areas;
  • Overseeing scenic service and construction processes required primarily by Drama but, where possible, also by other stakeholders in the School of the Arts, whether theatre based, site-specific, touring, festival, classroom-based or outdoor events;
  • Assisting with projects and events of all programmes in the School of Arts;
  • Designing sets and props (when required), managing and executing set and décor designs;
  • Ensuring that the construction and manufacturing of sets and décor are accomplished according to safety, professional and production requirements;
  • Assisting with set and décor construction;
  • Undertaking administration, logistical and other duties in this post as determined by the Chair of Drama and Head of the School of the Arts, including but not limited to asset registers ;
  • Assisting Drama students with creative projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as per the post domain in consultation with relevant Drama staff members in the areas of theatre technology and scenography;
  • Establishing needs for equipment, maintenance etc. ;
  • Overseeing stock procurement: budgeting, pricing, sourcing and transporting of materials;
  • Ensuring compliance to health and safety regulations within the section.


Minimum Requirements:
  • National Diploma / Degree: Entertainment Technology or BA degree with a specialisation in scenic construction and design;
  • At least 2 years' experience in a theatre scenic workshop environment;
  • Valid driver's licence.


Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):
  • Appropriate design vocabulary in contemporary modes of performance
  • Appropriate computer skills and use of relevant design software
  • Ability to work after hours in order to deliver sets and décor of the appropriate quality in the appropriate time frame
  • Ability to use relevant tools and machinery safely and effectively
  • Scene painting
  • Carpentry
  • Drawing
  • Metal work


Added Advantages and Preferences:
  • BA Hons, MA or MTech with a specialisation in scenic design;
  • Professional recognition for set design;
  • Conceptual understanding of design in contemporary modes of performance, including emerging performance and arts paradigms as well as contemporary developments in practice-as-research initiatives;
  • Appropriate professional experience in set and décor construction;
  • Management experience in a theatre scenic workshop environment or in a similar environment of creative work related to set and décor construction;
  • Appropriate experience in ensuring adherence and compliance to health and safety regulations.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
