The Strategic Pilots Incubator (SPI) is responsible for the development and management of a portfolio of exploratory projects and external partnerships that are inherently multidisciplinary that impact cancer research and treatment. Projects aim to analyze the complex interactions in tumor cells and tissues and model systems, blending the best of new physics and engineering-based advances with established technologies enabling new opportunities for deeper understanding of tumor biology and cancer progression.


SPI is seeking an experienced researcher at the Scientist II level to support a newly established High Content Imaging Facility at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. The program operates a number of advanced, specialized instrumentation platforms for image analysis of tumor biopsies and circulating tumor cells for measuring drug biomarker responses in patients and in relevant preclinical models. We are looking for a self-motivated and proactive individual interested in cutting-edge technology. The successful candidate will support implementation of Imaging Mass Cytometry (IMC) in support of basic and translational research initiatives. The Scientist II should demonstrate personal leadership within the group, scientific leadership both at the bench and at computational data analysis and be adept at multi-tasking. Special consideration will be given to candidates with emphasis in oncology and/or immunology backgrounds.

The Scientist II will:
  • Assist in the design, development, and validation of IMC assays
  • Lead efforts to identify, evaluate, and implement image analysis technologies and methodologies for processing and quantitation of multiplexed IMC images using commercial and open-source software packages
  • Apply analytic methods to phenotype cells, and to quantitate and spatially characterize molecular targets within tissue
  • Ensure management of image database
  • Assist in IMC sample preparation and data acquisition when necessary
  • Collaborate with R&D researchers to promote innovation, and to develop high-quality assays and analysis workflows
  • Analyze, interpret and effectively present data at team meetings and participate in generation of technical reports

  • Possession of a Doctoral degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of competent, innovative research experience beyond doctoral training in a related field of specialty is required
  • Proficiency in developing test or production methods or protocols in an applied area; demonstrated ability to manage a production operation or a segment of a specialized service area
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

  • Expertise in image processing, analysis, clustering and classification techniques, segmentation strategies, and data visualization.
  • Expertise with quantitative image analysis tools such as ImageJ, Definiens Developer, Visiopharm, MATLAB, or others.
  • Knowledge of programming techniques to categorize and analyze data sets, facilitating quantitative processing and interpretation of highly multiplexed images.
  • Proficiency in an Object-Oriented programming language such as Java, Python, C++ or others
  • Proficiency in any of R, MATLAB, SAS, or STATA
  • Prior experience with IMC, mass cytometry, or flow cytometry is desired.
  • Experience with antibody assay development
  • Experience with tissue and blood sample handling, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques, microscopy and/or pathology experience are a plus

  • This position will require the individual to be highly motivated and work well both in a team and independently
  • Ability to design, execute, and analyze experiments with moderate to low level of supervision
  • Highly organized, ability to maintain well documented laboratory protocols and notebooks
  • This position will require a high degree of proficiency in both verbal and written scientific communication
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and GraphPad Prism

  • Candidate will be working with or have the potential for exposure to infectious material(s) or Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM), requiring medical clearance and immunization in accordance with protocol requirements
