Background:
To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.

Summary of Role:
To undertake health and clinical intervention research in order to support the projects within a recently awarded research program on transforming the treatment and prevention of leprosy and Buruli ulcers in low and middle income countries.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:
  • The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Undertake health and clinical intervention research in order to support the work of a research unit dedicated to transforming the treatment and prevention of leprosy and Buruli ulcers across low and middle income countries, and support the department including developing and enhancing its reputation, both internally and externally.
  • To co-ordinate a clinical trial, including training staff working on the trial.
  • To organise and maintain project-related literature, data and documents; to liaise with international collaborators and other stakeholders of the project and to coordinate and provide assistance with project-related activities.
  • To produce high quality project reports and other outputs; to contribute to presentations of work at national/international conferences and to publish work in high quality, peer reviewed journals.
  • To contribute to other relevant research and teaching activities, such as collaborating on preparation of grant applications and research papers, providing advice on health and clinical intervention related issues to colleagues and students and helping with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
  • To develop specific areas of expertise in health and clinical intervention research. Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • To contribute to project meetings within and outside of the department and support project research administrators in the organisation of such meetings.
  • To engage in continuous professional development.
  • To participate in relevant professional activities.
  • To undertake specific departmental roles as may be reasonably required by your line manager.

Person Specification:
  • Good honours degree and possession of a PhD or equivalent in relevant discipline
  • Experience of academic writing including reports for research projects and academic publications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex processes, and to work with a range of people, including clinicians, patients, and communities
  • Experience, or an ability to demonstrate an understanding of working with clinicians, health workers and local communities in LMICs
  • Able to organise own workload and the ability to use initiative in working situations
  • Experience of working in a team and meeting tight deadlines
  • Experience of disseminating research findings through posters and oral presentations in academic conferences
  • Experience of mixed methods evaluation in applied health/medical research
  • Willingness to travel and undertake work placements in developing countries
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.


Desirable:
  • Experience of working on clinical studies, preferably in a co-ordination role
  • Ability to develop intervention guidelines, including piloting and adapting to specific groups and/or locales
  • Experience of thematic analysis
  • Experience of consensus development methods
  • Experience of training staff in data collection and analysis methods
