Full Time, Fixed Term Contract for up to 9 months

Job Summary

This is a fixed term post for up to 9 months , suitable for individuals wishing to develop their skills in Anatomy as a basis for further career development. The main responsibility will be to teach Anatomy, including Topographical Anatomy, Neuroanatomy and Histology/Cell Biology by means of small group teaching sessions and demonstration of prosected cadaveric material to undergraduate and postgraduate Medical, Dental and Science students in modularised courses run within the School of Medicine. There will also be an opportunity to assist in the preparation of prosections.

The Department of Anatomy is responsible for teaching gross and topographical anatomy, histology and neuroanatomy to first and second year pre-clinical students studying for degrees in Medicine and Dentistry and sudents in years 1 - 3 of a new MSc Pharmacy course. In addition we teach Biomedical Materials students and Medical Science students studying for the degree of BMedSc. Anatomy is mainly taught through small group teaching with some lectures. There is a systems-based approach to most teaching, which is organised in discrete modules, for instance Digestion, Cardiovascular, and Neuroscience, but there are also two Regional Anatomy modules for medical students.. We provide the anatomy component within each of these modules. Anatomy is taught in small groups of 16 students whom you will see regularly throughout any one module, but will rotate between modules. Students receive a worksheet - using this they should have read and completed preparatory work for and the small group sessions, demonstrators present an overview of the session and provide feedback on student learning through discussion in classes that last either one or two hours. Various resources are provided - these include models, plastinated specimens, prosectorium sessions, reference books, posters, skeleton, CDs etc, and our aim is to increase understanding and integration of anatomy with other aspects of the course. We include a clinical correlation in the medical teaching worksheets, to illustrate points of applied anatomy. Histology is taught via video units set up in each teaching room, and the videos will be used to provide short introductory teaching in some modules. Periodically, students hand in pieces of work to be assessed and completed tasks are also marked. At the end of each semester there is an examination period and you will be asked to help mark exam papers during this period. Some second year students have an anatomy viva in which you will be involved.

All students visit the recently refurbished dissection rooms where prosected specimens are demonstrated in order to illustrate three-dimensional anatomy. Fifteen students a year are involved in a special study module involving dissection; you may be involved in overseeing some student dissection within this module. Other Special Study Modules are offered and demonstrators are encouraged to help develop and run these.

You will be encouraged to dissect yourself in order to produce the prosections for teaching purposes both as wet specimens and for plastination.

To contribute to elements of teaching within a clear and established teaching programme (set by the academic responsible for the course, who supervises and manages the role-holder).
