Senior Research Associate / Research Associate in Health Economics

This post offers an exciting opportunity for an individual with training and experience in health economics, who has an interest in randomised controlled trials and analysis of routine data, to develop their career as an academic health economist.

You will join the Musculoskeletal Research Unit (MRU) to work in a myriad of research projects in trauma and orthopaedics, namely surgical trials in joint replacement. You will work closely with the wider Health Economics at the University of Bristol (HEB) research group, a network of health economists at Bristol spanning 3 departments and two Schools.

The main purpose of this job is to contribute to the Unit's portfolio of high quality clinical and methodological research, particularly in the use of economic evaluation methods to generate and synthesize evidence based on randomised controlled trials and routinely collected data.
You will be appointed to a level commensurate with your experience and skill. You will have the opportunity to widen and deepen your knowledge in a range of health economic methods according to your interests, write journal articles, travel to conferences, and contribute to future grant applications.

The MRU is a large successful unit within the department of Translational Health Sciences (THS) within the Bristol Medical School. The MRU is a leading UK musculoskeletal research centre, with over 50 staff, managing a wide range of cohort and interventional studies in age-related musculoskeletal conditions. The MRU holds over £62 million in active grants income from the NIHR, research councils, charities and other funders. We have extensive experience managing large datasets and running multi-centred research. We are commissioned by HQIP to provide the statistical analysis for the National Joint Registry, we hold and analyse data from the National Hip Fracture Database, UK hospital episode statistics and many multi-centre study datasets. Due to the success of the unit, we will be in a position to extend this post into the longer term.

HEB researchers study the economics of health and healthcare. Our team works across a range of topics including the economics of health and care across the life course, efficiency and equity in health care decisions, and developing methods for applied health economics. HEB has grown rapidly in the last 10 years and we now have more than 25 researchers and PhD students. We aim to develop the careers of all members of our team and to help them fulfil their potential.

With supervision from a senior economist, you will be involved in the conduct, analysis and interpretation of the cost-effectiveness aspects of funded studies, including economic evaluation alongside trials and cohort studies, and sometimes economic decision models. You will disseminate results via publications and conference presentations to change policy and practice. You will use your skills to help design the health economic aspects of trials and contribute to future grant applications.
