Position Title: Associate Editor - Life Science

Working Location: Beijing or Shanghai, China

Working closely with the existing co-EiCs, the Associate Editor will be responsible for ensuring the continued development of the open access journal Ecology and Evolution. The Associate Editor will assess direct submissions to the journal, as well as submissions transferred from supporter journals, soliciting referee reports and making acceptance/rejection decisions. The Associate Editor will also be alert to new opportunities for development, and will be responsible for networking to promote the journal within the Chinese research communities.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:
  • Managing the peer review process for the journal, and making acceptance/rejection decisions for submitted articles
  • Working with external and internal co-EiCs to achieve publishing targets by maximizing referrals from supporter titles, and conducting fast and efficient review
  • Utilizing the ScholarOne Manuscripts system
  • Liaising with the co-EiCs and with marketing and editorial colleagues to promote the journal to authors, funders, and the community of researchers, eg by running author workshops and giving talks at institutions.
  • Facilitate a shared editorial mission and coherent journal strategy, participating in regular meetings with colleagues and other editors
  • Liaise with supporter journals as required
  • Represent the journal within the researcher community, including travel to/presentations at scientific conferences

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or equivalent experience in ecology or evolutionary biology
  • Experience in handling peer-review processes/independent decision making/conflict resolution
  • Proficiency in content acquisition techniques. Knowledge of the ethical issues important in peer review
  • Familiarity with life sciences author and referee communities
  • Excellent planning and negotiation skills
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills;
  • Good networking skills
  • Highly motivated and achievement oriented
