Die Departement Wiskundige Wetenskappe is verantwoordelik vir onderrig en navorsing in Wiskunde, Toegepaste Wiskunde, en Rekenaarwetenskap by die Universiteit Stellenbosch. Die Afdeling Rekenaarwetenskap doen aktief navorsing in kunsmatige intelligensie en masjienleer, outomaatteorie, programanalise, -toetsing en -verifikasie, en rekenaarnetwerke (meer inligting is beskikbaar op ons webwerf: www.cs.sun.ac.za ). Ons wil graag ons navorsingskundigheid op die gebied van databasisstelsels versterk, in samewerking met die nuutgestigte Skool vir Datawetenskap en Rekenaardenke by die Universiteit Stellenbosch.

Professor / Associate Professor: Database Systems

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is responsible for teaching and research in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at Stellenbosch University. The Computer Science Division is research-active in artificial intelligence and machine learning, automata theory, program analysis, testing, and verification, and computer networks (more information is available on our webpage: www.cs.sun.ac.za ). It is keen to strengthen its position in database systems, in collaboration with the recently established School for Data Science and Computational Thinking at Stellenbosch University.

Duties/ Pligte

• Navorsing en publikasie;
• Verkryging van navorsing- of projekbefondsing;
• Advies en studieleiding aan nagraadse studente;
• Onderrig voor- en nagraadse rekenaarwetenskapmodules;
• Administratiewe leierskap, wat die moontlikheid insluit om op roterende basis as afdelingshoof van die Afdeling Rekenaarwetenskap op te tree;
• Samewerking met die Skool vir Datawetenskap en Rekenaardenke by die Universiteit Stellenbosch.

• Research and publication;
• Securing research or project funding;
• Advising and supervising postgraduate students;
• Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate computer science modules;
• Administrative leadership; including the possiblity to act as division head of Computer Science on a rotational basis;
• Collaborating with the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking at Stellenbosch University.

Job Requirements/ Pos Vereistes

• PhD in Rekenaarwetenskap of Rekenaaringenieurswese;
• Bewese loopbaanrekord van konferensiebydraes en artikels wat in internasionaal-erkende rekenaarwetenskapvaktydskrifte en konferensieverrigtinge gepubliseer is;
• Loopbaanrekord van suksesvolle verkryging van navorsing- of projekbefondsing;
• Rekord van suksesvolle nagraadse studieleiding tot op PhD-vlak;
• Bewese nasionale erkenning vir en internasionale blootstelling aan databasisstelsels navorsing;
• Goeie mondelinge en skriftelike kommunikasievaardighede in Engels.

Daarbenewens, vir aanstelling as Professor,

• Aansienlike internasionale erkenning as kenner op die gebied van databasisstelsels;
• Bewese leierskapsvaardighede en -ervaring;
• Bewese betrokkenheid by akademiese dienslewering, wat onder andere kan insluit: optree as referent, en/of programkomiteelid van 'n internasionale konferensie, gasspreker, komiteelid van 'n professionele raad.

Aansoekers moet 'n volledige navorsingsverklaring en onderrigfilosofie indien.

Aansoekers wat genooi word vir 'n onderhoud 'n lesing oor sy/haar onlangse navorsing moet aanbied.

• PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering;
• Proven track record of conference presentations and publication in internationally recognised computer science journals and conference proceedings;
• Track record of securing research or project funding;
• Record of successful postgraduate student supervision up to PhD level;
• Proven national recognition for and international exposure in database systems research;
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

In addition, for appointment as Professor,

• Significant international recognition as expert in database systems;
• Proven leadership abilities and experience;
• Proven involvement in academic service which may include, amongst others, referee and/or programme committee member for international conference, plenary speaker, committee member of a professional society.

Applicants are required to submit a detailed research statement and teaching philosophy.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research.
