Area: School of Metallurgy and Materials in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £41,526 to £49,533 with potential progression once in post to £55,750

Band/Grade: Grade 8

Hours: Full time

Duration: Fixed-term until 31 March 20232

This post is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The post holder's primary objective will be to ensure that the suite of technology demonstrators to be delivered in the project meet the needs and expectations of stakeholders and provide a compelling case for the uptake of Advanced Material Characterisation And Simulation Hub (AMCASH) by regional manufacturing SMEs. The postholder will initiate and conduct original research which has measurable outcomes and is reflected in a growing national and often incipient international reputation. They will Plan, design and co-ordinate research activities and programmes and contribute to the development of research strategies. They will publish the results of their own research, supervise PhD students and contribute to the School through management/ leadership. Supporting academics to present findings in high quality publications and conference proceedings, they will develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued. The role involves developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities, widening participation, schools outreach or similar activities at School level or further within the University.

Main Duties

These may include, where appropriate to the discipline:
  • Pursue research and development ideas and winning support, including financial support
  • Plan and carry out research, using appropriate methodology and techniques
  • Supporting academics to plan, publish and/or execute high quality research
  • Project manage research activities, and/or supervise other research staff
  • Supporting academics to present findings in high quality publications and conference proceedings
  • Develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued
  • Support, supervise and examine PhD students, both within and out with the University
  • Provide expert advice to colleagues and students within discipline
  • Contribute to the administration/ management of research across the School
  • Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University
  • Contribute to some administrative activities within the University, typically relating to research
  • Apply knowledge in a way that develops new intellectual understanding
  • Actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour
  • Support business engagement manager in engaging with local SMEs and wider industry sectors needed for the AMCASH project
  • Support project manager in managing and reporting needed for the AMCASH project
  • Support project director in delivering the R&D support to industry within the AMCASH project and beyond
  • Support the instrumentation of advanced materials characterisation facilities at the University


Person Specification
  • Hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD degree in relevant areas or equivalent qualifications or experience.
  • Extensive research experience and scholarship in physical metallurgy and/or materials characterisation including electron microscopy techniques (knowledge on crystal plasticity is desirable).
  • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results
  • Extensive experience of applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques and methods
  • Extensive experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied
  • Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action
  • High level of analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
