Aga Khan University's (AKU) Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is a preeminent public health institution in the country. The vision of the Chancellor set the direction for the University to take a lead in community development and the creation of an innovative curriculum that emphasises a balance between patient care and population health. CHS has played a major role in pursuing this over the past several decades by leading the development of national level primary health care, public health practice, health systems through evidence-based approach. CHS has established successful models in urban and rural settings in Pakistan emphasising empowerment - building on the strengths of communities. As part of an international University, CHS collaborates in a global network of outstanding research and teaching institutions, including AKU affiliates in East Africa and Central Asia.

CHS has five major units - Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Health Policy & Management, Population & Reproductive Health, Environmental Health, and Non-Communicable Diseases & Mental Health.

Responsibilities

Serving as the Head of the Epidemiology & Biostatistics Section, you will be responsible for:
  • developing and conducting quality educational and training programmes in epidemiology and biostatistics for undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students at the Aga Khan University
  • overseeing and contributing to the development of advanced courses in epidemiology and biostatistics such as bayesian inference, disease modeling, multivariate analysis etc.
  • developing continuing education programmes and tailored educational programme in communicable diseases and surveillance methods
  • continually improving and guiding the master's programme in epidemiology & biostatistics which focuses on epidemiology, biostatistics, data management, community health, and information technology
  • mobilising grants and establishing a research programme in high risk populations, childhood diarrhea, respiratory infections in specific cohorts, malaria surveillance, antimicrobial resistance, and outbreak investigation of HIV
  • prioritising areas for strengthening capacity in advanced analyses, to foster methodological research agenda in communicable diseases
  • collaborating with research scientists and key stakeholders, nationally and internationally, and promoting AKU as a centre with high level expertise in public health and infectious diseases.


Requirements

You should have:
  • a PhD in Public Health discipline with a preferable focus in Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases from an HEC recognised or reputable foreign university/institution
  • at least ten years of teaching/research experience in the field of Epidemiology & Biostatistics in an HEC recognised University or a post-graduate Institution with demonstrated professional accomplishment and evidence of publications and successful performance in grant writing, and scientific/public health research & development
  • good teaching skills and knowledge of new teaching methodologies and practices
  • ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written in English and Urdu, command over other local/regional languages would be an added advantage
  • good academic writing skills
  • proficiency in use of computer software packages used for epidemiological and statistical analysis of data
  • ability of building and promoting partnerships across the organisation and beyond
  • capability for curriculum planning and organizing skills for research administration
  • good interpersonal skills and commitment to learning, growth, and self-development.
