Join our interdisciplinary team investigating the aquatic plant community of Coorong South Lagoon with the goal to improve the ecological health of the ecosystem

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our interdisciplinary team investigating the aquatic plant community of Coorong South Lagoon with the goal to improve the ecological health of the ecosystem.

This research is being supported by a commitment to restore a healthy Coorong, announced by the Australian and South Australian governments in December 2018 as a component of Project Coorong . This project is being delivered through a partnership between the Goyder Institute for Water Research, the Department for Environment and Water (DEW), The University of Adelaide School of Biological Sciences, South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) Aquatic Sciences Research Division, Flinders University and the University of Western Australia.

The focus of research to be undertaken by the postdoctoral scientist will be to address knowledge gaps and system scale responses of primary producers in the Coorong South Lagoon that leads to reducing filamentous and water column algal growth and restore Ruppia distribution and abundance. This research will support the management of the Coorong through facilitating a shift in the southern Coorong ecosystem from the present state which is algal dominated to a Ruppia dominated habitat. The research will also support outcomes leading to improved water quality and to restore the ecological function associated with improved aquatic plant abundance.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this project, the successful postdoctoral scientist will also have opportunities to collaborate and interact more closely with other research groups and teams working on the project, including sediment and water quality researchers, hydrologists, ecologists, numerical modellers, agency managers and to also participate in an active science integration process.

The postdoctoral scientist will need to design and deliver field and laboratory surveys, experiments and the collection of primary biological and environmental data. Data collected and shared will be critical to informing aquatic vegetation modelling, documenting plant phenology and growth responses, approaches to habitat restoration and long-term ecosystem planning. The successful candidate will be a senior member of a team being appointed to support delivery of this project and an immediate starting date is critical.

To be successful you will need:

• PhD or equivalent qualification (PhD thesis submitted) in aquatic plant biology, restoration and management or primary producers in aquatic plant systems (experience in hypersaline or marine habitats desirable).
• Record of research achievements, evidenced by publications in leading scientific journals, and contributions to international scientific conferences.
• Proficiency with experimental design and statistical analysis of ecological and associated data.
• Excellent ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and present to a diversity of audiences including the general public.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team, both under the direction of supervisors and as a project leader.

This position requires a valid Working with Children Check or as a minimum Police Clearance with a willingness to acquire the Working with Children Check.
