The Graduate School of Social Sciences (G3S) is the umbrella structure for doctoral training in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Basel. The languages of instruction at the Graduate School are English and German. As of April 1, 2021, the G3S is offering a total of three start-up scholarships (30,000 CHF / 12 months). The start-up scholarships will be transferred to the scholarship holders in two installments of CHF 15,000 each in April 2021 and October 2021, the latter after the first six months in the event of a positive evaluation.

Your tasks

The start-up scholarships enable young researchers who are just starting their doctorate to work out their doctoral project and to acquire third-party funding for further implementation, e.g. from the Swiss National Science Foundation. The payment of the second tranche of the scholarship is linked to the submission of a corresponding scholarship or research application.
The candidates are expected to be highly motivated to develop their independent doctoral project and to work hard in the graduate school. The willingness to fit into an interdisciplinary environment and to take part in social science debates is a prerequisite for an application.

Your profile

The prerequisite for the application is a master's degree with a final grade of at least 5.0 according to the Swiss grading system. Doctoral candidates in the G3S should either have a disciplinary background in one of the social sciences of the department (e.g. ethnology, cultural anthropology, Middle East studies, political science, sociology, gender studies see: ), or be trained in interdisciplinary fields and areas that as sub-programs are also represented in the G3S:
  • Graduate College Gender Studies:
  • Center for African Studies:
  • MUBIT: Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies:
  • Doctoral program in religious studies:
  • International Graduate School North-South:
  • Sustainability research:
  • Doctoral programs in cultural anthropology:
