The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training and is part of its Staffing South Africa's Universities Framework (SSAUF). nGAP, seeks to accelerate the academic careers of individuals from designated groups by providing opportunities to acquire a postgraduate qualification (ideally at doctoral level), within an overall programme which provides mentoring and support as appointees are inducted into all areas of academic life. Appointees are provided with a much reduced workload in the early years of the six-year programme.

The nGAP offers a rare opportunity for individuals with an interest in pursuing an academic career to be developed in a supportive programme designed for their needs.

The position is aimed at individuals who are:
  • Interested in and can demonstrate commitment to an academic career
  • 40 years of age and younger
  • Eligible for postgraduate study at doctoral level
  • Willing to commit to an appointment at Rhodes University for the full 6 years of the nGAP.

Requirements:

A Master's degree in any Music discipline with an intention to complete a PhD in Ethnomusicology. Background in Indigenous African Music performance practice. In addition, candidates should have:
  • Tutoring or facilitation experience required. No teaching experience is required
  • Ability to teach in the following disciplinary areas: Ethnomusicology; World Music studies; Indigenous African Musical Arts performance practice.
  • No research supervision required.
  • Some record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal), will be an advantage.
  • Evidence of Indigenous African Music performances (this can be submitted in any video format)

Remuneration:

Basic salary Pension/Provident fund: R455, 373 per annum:

Approximate cost to company: R639, 418 per annum
