Job Details

(Level A) $88,286 per annum plus an employer contribution of up to 17% superannuation may apply.

The University of Adelaide Enterprise Agreement 2017-2021 will apply to a successful candidate's employment at the University. The University recently temporarily varied its Enterprise Agreement. Please be advised that the salary range, along with other conditions associated with this position, may change in accordance with the variation to the Enterprise Agreement.

This is a fixed-term position available for up to 3 years.

Empower predictions of coherently moving structures and their interactions.

Many systems in nature are driven by time-varying inputs; prototypical examples being pollutants, heat energy, hurricanes and oceanic eddies being moved according to prevalent velocities. There are often coherently moving regions which have dominant influence in transport, e.g., the Gulf Stream, Jupiter's Great Red Spot, the Antarctic Circumpolar Vortex, or unmixed fluid blobs within an industrial mixer. Using velocity data to understand the motion of these fundamental entities is now well established; however, ascribing uncertainties to such predictions is less so.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to drive new theoretical and computational analysis for uncertainty quantification in such situations, funded by the Australian Research Council for the project "Uncertainty in coherent transport of particles and intrinsic properties" awarded to Sanjeeva Balasuriya. The successful candidate will develop new computational methods in dealing with experimental and observational velocity data, as well as contribute to advances in the theory of coherent structure detection.

This work will also be in collaboration with Nick Ouellette's group at Stanford University, and may include visits to Stanford. Other domestic and international travel opportunities for research visits and conferences are available.

To be successful you will need:
  • A recent PhD in applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, or allied area related to this project.
  • Strong computational skills, with demonstrated ability to code as well as deal with large data sets.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the areas of dynamical systems, fluid mechanics or stochastic analysis.
  • A record of research achievements.
  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
