Science Technician

Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Mathematics and Science Learning Centre

Are you an experienced science technician with a background in working in schools and colleges supporting school science across all three sciences? Are you looking for a new perspective working in a higher education environment? We are looking for a part-time laboratory technician to support the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in the Education School at the University of Southampton, and the professional development programmes hosted by the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre. You will be responsible for preparing and setting up equipment for practical work and demonstrations across all three sciences for secondary PGCE and SKE (subject knowledge enhancement) courses, primary science PGCE and professional development courses for the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre, largely CLEAPSS courses. You will also be responsible for overseeing health and safety and the maintenance of the laboratory facilities and equipment in the Education School (Building 34 laboratories and the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre), and maintenance and ordering of consumables. You will be comfortable in liaising with external partners, such as CLEAPSS, to resource professional development courses.

This post is suitable for a highly motivated individual with the ability to work proactively with colleagues to lead technical support for the Education School. You will have a responsible working attitude, be able to display a high level of motivation and be able to work effectively as a lone technician, but also as part of a small team. Your work pattern will need to be flexible in order to cover all activity, and the PGCE sessions currently take place on Fridays so you will be required to work on this day of the week.

Be a part of the University of Southampton, an institution in the top one per cent of world universities and one of the UK's top 15 research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
