Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have an established background in sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as biological control of crop pests?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

The Research Fellow will be based in the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Leeds and work on a Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Cluster project that focusses on the scaling up of biocontrol innovations in Africa. This project brings together three projects funded by GCRF in a new exciting collaboration involving the Universities of Keele and Lancaster and partners in Africa; The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN, South Africa), Zambia Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI), the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE, Kenya), and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST, Tanzania). We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate biological control approaches in Africa, with a focus on both the uptake and barriers to adoption of these innovations, as well as exploring the extent of biological control recommendations in agricultural policy. This part of the project will help identify sustainable pathways for upscaling successful biocontrol interventions.

You will have a flair for conducting ecological analytical research and stakeholder engagement, along with an interest in cutting edge science linking ecology to socio-economic development. You will work in a multidisciplinary team with ecologists, social scientists, policy advocates and agricultural entomologists. You will play a key role in the analysis and synthesis of biocontrol research and reviews of national and regional-scale agricultural policies in Africa, along with writing and stakeholder engagement.Note that the work may involve a trip to Africa.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN (the national body that promotes gender equality in higher education), and the Faculty of Biological Sciences was reawarded a Bronze award in 2017. We are proud to be an inclusive Faculty that values all staff, and are happy to consider job share applications and requests for flexible working arrangements from our employees.
