Die Universiteit Stellenbosch het tans ''n vakature vir die Leerstoel in Wetenskapskommunikasie. Die Leerstoel onderneem navorsing oor verskeie aspekte van wetenskapskommunikasie, maak ''n bydrae tot die nasionale kapasiteit in die veld, sowel as die uitbou van bestaande en nuwe netwerke met die internasionale gemeenskap van wetenskaplikes in die veld. Die Leerstoel se navorsingsagenda is gerig op beide internasionale sowel as nasionale prioriteite. Die Leerstoel het tans vyf fokusareas: Die persepsies en opvattings van die Suid-Afrikaanse (landelike, semi-stedelike en stedelike) bevolking oor wetenskap; Verslaglewering deur die massamedia as 'n bron van openbare persepsies; Wetenskapsadvies en sosiale media reikwydte, modaliteite, gehaltebeheer en geloofwaardigheid; Wetenskapskommunikasie en wetenskaplike advies vir beleidmaking en spesifieke teikengroepe; en Wetenskapskommunikasie deur wetenskaplikes en wetenskaplike organisasies belange, gehore en formate.

South African Research Chair in Science Communication

Stellenbosch University seeks to appoint a new Chair to head up the South African Research Chair in Science Communication. The Chair is devoted to research on all aspects of science communication. It is expected to aid in establishing a national research capacity in the field, as well as to establish and maintain connections to the international community of scholars in this field. Its research is to address issues of international interest as well as issues of national concern. Five focus areas constitute the Chair's research programme: Perceptions and expectations of science among different parts of the SA population (rural, semi-urban and urban); Mass media reporting of science as a source of public perceptions; Science communication and social media - range, formats, quality control, credibility; Science communication and scientific advice for policymaking and specialised target groups; and Science communication by scientists and scientific organisations - motives, audiences, formats.

Duties/Pligte

Die posbekleër sal die Leerstoel opneem vir die periode 2020 tot 2024. Die spesifieke verwagtinge van die posbekleër is die volgende:
  • Ontwikkel en voorsien studieleiding aan Meesters- en Doktorale studente in Wetenskapskommunikasie in die Wetenskap- en Tegnologiestudie-programme wat deur SENWET aangebied word;
  • Verseker dat ''n hoë aantal navorsingsuitsette (tydskrifartikels, boeke en boekhoofstukke en konferensieverrigtinge) geproduseer word;
  • Die instandhouding van die aantal en deurvloei van nagraadse studente opleiding en jaarlikse graduering op die Meesters- en Doktorale-vlakke;
  • Skryf van interne verslae aan die Direkteur: SENWET en die Vise-rektor: Navorsing, Innovasie en Nagraadse Studie en eksterne verslae aan die NNS soos benodig;
  • Ondersteun, verbeter en maak ''n beduidende bydrae tot die navorsingskultuur in SENWET;
  • Bestuur en versterk internasionale en nasionale samewerking in die veld;
  • Ontwikkel, ondersteun en befonds nadoktorale genote;
  • Skryf voorleggings ten einde buitefondse vir die aktiwiteite van die Leerstoel te bekom.


The incumbent will be taking over the Chair for the period 2020-2024. Specifically, the new Chair will:
  • Develop and supervise Master's and Doctoral students in Science Communication in the Science and Technology Studies degree programmes offered by CREST;
  • Maintain a high number and high quality of research output (in the form of accredited and peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, books, conference proceedings);
  • Maintain the number and throughput of postgraduate students trained and graduated annually at master's and Doctoral level;
  • Provide reports internally to the Director: CREST, the Vice-Rector: Research Innovation and Postgraduate Studies and externally to the NRF and any other reports as required;
  • Enhance, support, and contribute to the research culture of CREST;
  • Attract and retain excellent international and national collaborations in the field;
  • Develop, support and fund cohorts of post-doctoral fellows;
  • Write proposals in order to attract external funding to support the activities and resources required for the Chair

  • ''n Doktorsgraad in die sosiale wetenskappe of humaniora (verkieslik in wetenskapskommunikasie, wetenskapsosiologie, gesondheidskommunikasie, wetenskapstudie, joernalistiek of kommunikasie- en mediastudie);
  • Moet 'n bewese rekord hê in studieleiding aan Meesters- en Doktorale studente;
  • Bewese rekord as eksamineerder van Meesters- en Doktorale studente in bogenoemde dissiplines;
  • ''n Beduidende navorsingsproduksie - boeke en artikels in internasionale ewekniebeoordeelde vaktydskrifte, veral die top internasionale wetenskapskommunikasie joernale;
  • ''n Bewese rekord in die verkryging van en bestuur van navorsingsfondse;
  • ''n Bewese suksevolle rekord in navorsingsbestuur;
  • Bewese rekord van die bestuur van ''n diverse navorsingspan.

Indien die posbekleër van buite Suid-Afrika kom, moet hy of sy bereid wees om minstens 50% van sy/haar tyd aan die Leerstoel te wy.

  • Currently be a full professor or appointable at the level of a full professor;
  • A PhD in the social sciences or humanities (preferably in science communication, sociology of science, health communication, science studies, journalism or communication and media studies);
  • Demonstrable experience as supervisor of Master's and Doctoral students;
  • Established record of being an examiner of Master's and Doctoral students in above-mentioned disciplines;
  • Evidence of scholarly books and articles in international peer-reviewed journals, especially in the top international science communication journals;
  • Successful and proven track record in securing and managing research funds;
  • Successful and proven track record in research management.
  • Evidence of managing a diverse research team.

The incumbent (if from outside South Africa), must be willing to devote at least 50% of his/her time to the Chair.
