Die Departement Fisiologiese Wetenskappe bied onderrig in alle menslike fisiologiese sisteme insluitend: die mens as eenheid, organe, weefsels, selle, en geïntegreerde fisiologie in reaksie op eksterne of interne stressors. Navorsingsmodelle sluit gesonde en siek menslike vrywilligers in, asook weefsel vanaf pasiënte, klein laboratoriumgebaseerde diermodelle wat menslike patologiese toestande simuleer om meganismes van aangepaste reaksies op interne en eksterne stressors of molekulêre drywers van patologie te ondersoek, die analise van heelliggaam en weefselproefmateriaal, en in-vitro sel en molekulêre aspekte (sien ons webblad vir ons navorsingsfokusareas: http://www0.sun.ac.za/physiologicalsci/afr/departement.php ).

Physiological Sciences

The Department of Physiological Sciences teaches all systems of human physiology, including: the human body as a unit, organs, tissues, cells and integrative physiology in response to external or internal stressors. Research models include healthy and diseased human volunteers or samples derived from patients, small laboratory animal models simulating human pathological conditions allowing to investigate mechanisms of the adaptive responses to respective internal or external stressors or molecular drivers of the pathology, whole body and tissue sample analysis, and in vitro cell and molecular aspects (see our website for our research focus areas: http://www0.sun.ac.za/physiologicalsci/eng/department.php ).

Duties/Pligte
  • Onderrig van voor- en nagraadse Fisiologiese Wetenskap-modules;
  • Navorsing en die publisering daarvan in ewekniebeoordeelde vaktydskrifte in 'n veld verwant aan een van die navorsingsfokusareas (sien webblad) in Fisiologiese Wetenskappe, en/of onderrig en leer in Fisiologiese Wetenskappe deur gebruik te maak van gevorderde leermetodes in Fisologiese Wetenskappe;
  • Die werwing van, en studieleiding aan nagraadse studente in Fisiologiese Wetenskappe;
  • Vestiging van 'n navorsingsgroep in 'n veld verwant aan een van die navorsingsfokusareas van die Department; of samewerking met een van die bestaande navorsingsgroepe in die Departement;
  • Die werwing van navorsingsfondse;
  • Deelname aan akademies toepaslike departementele en fakulteitsaktiwiteite, soos nodig.


  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Physiological Science modules;
  • Research and publication in peer-reviewed journals in a field aligned to one of the research focus areas (refer to website), and/or in teaching and learning, using advanced teaching and learning methods in Physiological Sciences;
  • Recruiting and supervision of postgraduate students in Physiological Sciences;
  • Establishing a research group in a field aligned to one of the research focus areas in the Department; or to join a current research group in the Department;
  • Securing research funding;
  • Participating in academically relevant departmental and faculty activities, as required.


Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • PhD in Fisiologiese Wetenskappe, Menslike Biologie, of ''n verwante dissipline;
  • Bewese ervaring in die aanbied van voorgraadse Fisiologiese Wetenskap-modules op tersiêre vlak;
  • Publikasies in ewekniebeoordeelde vaktydskrfite in die toepaslike navorsingsgebied, ondersteun deur navorsingsondervinding in minstens een van die navorsingsfokusareas van die Departement Fisiologiese Wetenskappe;
  • Goeie mondelinge en skriftelike kommunikasievaardighede in Engels.


Aansoekers wat vir ''n onderhoud genooi word , moet ''n lesing oor hul onlangse navorsing aanbied ten einde hul kennis en kommunikasievaardigheid te demonstreer.

  • PhD in Physiological Sciences, Human Biology, or a similar field;
  • Proven experience in offering undergraduate Physiological Science modules at tertiary level;
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals in the relevant research field, commensurate with experience in at least one of the research focus areas of the Department of Physiological Sciences;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.


Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research to evaluate their knowledge and communication skills.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling
  • Nadoktorale of toepaslike navorsingservaring in die akademie of industrie;
  • Kommunikasievaardighede in Afrikaans en/of isiXhosa;
  • Die vermoë om die Departement se uiteenlopende fokusareas uit te brei, en ook geïntegreerde fisiologie te beoefen in navorsing en onderrig;
  • Belangstelling om onderrig en leer tegnologie uit te brei.


  • Post-doctoral or appropriate academic or industry research experience;
  • Communication skills in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa;
  • The ability to expand the Department's diverse focus areas and the ability to implement integrative physiology in research and teaching;
  • An interest in expanding teaching and learning technologies.
