Silicon Photonics

You will join our group and take on a role on the flagship project QUDOS Project (EPSRC EP/T028475/1) focusing on the monolithic integration of quantum dot lasers with silicon photonics based circuits. This is a great opportunity for you to work in collaboration with academic partners (University College London, University of Cambridge and Cardiff University) and industrial partners including Microsoft, Rockley photonics UK, Airbus or Leonardo . We are a fast growing team of over 40 researchers focussing on the field of Silicon Photonics, based within the state-of-the-art Zepler Institute Cleanroom Facilities ( http://www.zeplerinstitute.com/facilities ) at the University of Southampton. The project will be undertaken under the supervision of Dr Frederic Gardes ( https://gp-iv-photonics.org ).

To be successful you will have a strong experience in group IV or group III/V semiconductor materials and will be able to demonstrate experience in semiconductor device fabrication in a clean room environment. In addition you will have a background in laboratory photonic experimentation with critical evaluation and interpretation of data and hold a PhD** or equivalent qualification related to semiconductor processing or integrated photonics. Experience in silicon photonics (group IV) or group III/V based semiconductor material processing is critical.

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the Zepler Institute. We particularly encourage women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME), LGBT and disabled applicants to apply for this position. We value diversity and inclusion at the University and aspire for our staff population to be broadly representative of our community. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has recently been awarded the Platinum EcoAward. Our vision is to embed the principles of sustainability into all aspects of our individual and collective work, integrating sustainable development into our business planning, policy-making, and professional activities. This commits all of our staff and students to take responsibility for managing their activities to minimise harm to the environment, whether this through switching off non-essential electrical equipment or using the recycling facilities.

*subject to qualifying criteria

**Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

This post is a full time fixed term of 2 years with a possibility to extend the position beyond the end of the current contract duration.
