Job Details

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Pain Neurobiology to join the group of Professor Tony Pickering within the Anaesthesia, Pain and Critical Care research team.

Your research will focus on a group of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurones in the brainstem that release ß-endorphin to regulate of nociception and autonomic function. The project will use opto- and chemo-genetic manipulations to define the functional roles and signaling mechanisms of this set of neurons in GM mice. These experiments will focus on pain and autonomic control involving a range of assays be run in vivo and in working heart brainstem preparation with post hoc anatomical and gene expression studies. The replacement post is funded as part of an MRC project and will be for 9 months.

You will have a good honours degree and a relevant PhD, experience in opto- and chemo-genetics as well as the working-heart brainstem preparation and of neural and cardiovascular implants for awake recordings in rodents. You will show strong motivation and a good publication record in neuroscience.
