Research Fellowon the development of planar grating couplers for cold atom traps

We are seeking applicants for a research position on the development of planar grating couplers for use with cold atom trap systems. The successful recruit will join the Zepler Institute for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (ZIPN) at the University of Southampton; a world-leading research institute with over 200JG1 staff and students performing cutting-edge research and innovative solutions for real-world applications in manufacturing, communication technology, defence, health care, renewable energy and the environment.

Our team specialises in the development and manufacturing of novel optoelectronic devices for applications in quantum technology, integrated optical sensors and laser optics. This post will develop the fabrication of planar grating couplers towards the deliverables of the Innovate UK project, QT Assemble. This £10m academic/industrial collaboration will deliver integrated platforms and processes for the next generation of Quantum Technology. This project focuses on close partnership with industry to develop and translate our world-leading research into systems that will build the UK's Quantum technology sector.

The goal of this post is to build an integrated beam delivery system for cold atom trap systems. The successful candidate will manufacture integrated planar grating couplers using the bespoke fabrication facilities developed within our research group, including flame hydrolysis deposition, direct UV laser writing, and also the Integrated Planar Cleanroom facilities.

We are seeking motivated candidates with a *PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in planar optical waveguide fabrication, planar waveguide characterisation, laser inscription, and Bragg gratings. You will be required to conduct hands-on fabrication and be willing to perform research independently as well as part of an academic-industrial collaborative team. Your role will also support the work of junior staff and PhD students.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The appointment is for a full time fixed term for a 12 month period, ideally starting in November 2020.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Dr James Gates gates@southampton.ac.uk

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
